I want to try a different temperature gauge in the cluster to see if it cures the flickering/sticking problem. The replacement unit is from a Motometer cluster and the current one is VDO. Will this effect compatability? Cheers.

You have tried tightening the little brass nut on the rear of the cluster? :D

Tried that but it was already tight. The problem is the needle sometimes jumps up to just below the red line. Give the dash a couple of smacks and it goes back to it's regular position.

Could be a poor connection at the cluster plug?

Do not know which one,but a check of the wire colour at the sender will soon locate it!

A poor connection there wouldn't make it read higher than it should at any time. The only thing that would do this is a problem with the gauge's earthing path, which the securing nuts are part of.
If the description of the fault is accurate, the problem lies in this area but could be a crack in the copper print or similar.
TBH, changing the actual gauge may or may not cure the problem, and even if it does, fitting the 'dud' gauge in the donor cluster, may result in it working perfectly in that.
