Just fitted a 1986 2.5 engine into my 1989 e30 which was originally a 2.0 I'm having problems starting it and have just read about the coil wire. When I brought then engine with the loom, the green coil wire was cut. I have read that it goes up through inside of the car behind the dash? But I'm sure my 2.0 engine didn't do this?

Any ideas?

Thanks

You should have fitted the facelift 2.0 litre loom to the 2.5 engine, and changed the 'chip' in the ECU for a 2.5 one. That gives you the benefits of a high comp. engine with a considerably more advanced management system.
The green wire goes to both the coil and the ECU in the engine loom, connects to the body loom via pin 7 of the C101 engine loom plug and socket, and goes from there to a two pin plug above the top of the glove box area. The other plain green wire in this plug comes from a plug and socket clipped half way down the steering column, where it connects to the ignition switch.

Just looked I still cannot find the 2 pin plug above the glove box? If I was to put my 2.0 facelift loom on the engine would I have to change the crank sensor so that it's at the front of the engine or could I still run it from the rear?

Change the toothed wheel on the crank pulley, fit the crank sensor, fit the ignition lead with the pulse sensor and change the oil pressure switch (different plug).
The improved management is how BMW managed to lower the compression ratio without losing engine performance.

Don't quite understand what the coil lead being cut has to do with the loom inside the car? If it's been cut, why can't you splice a repair in place?

If your car has a properly fitted immobiliser, the green wire plug will be connected to a connector with either two plain black wires or a green and a green/red wire.
