I have a e46 with an m43 engine. It's been misbehaving ie flat spots and an erratic tick over. I must admit I don't really bother with the pile of junk too much. The other day whilst under the bonnet with it running I have noticed a pretty loud rattle towards the rear of the bay. It goes away under spool up and comes back on spool down. Also it seems to get worse when the engine is hot.
My guess is a knackered timing chain tensioner. Is there anyway to confirm this?

What milage has it got scjimbo? Does sound like a worn chain tensioner or chain related parts.

Is the sound coming from around the inlet manifold area? Is the engine management lamp on?
