Auto box question

I'm about to change my auto box filter as been told it makes a big difference to it ? But what type of oil as been told I have to buy bmw auto gearbox oil is this true ? It's a 1988 316i auto

Recommended oil for your box is ordinary Dextron II ATF, now largely superseded by improved Dextron III.
