Power Steering issue

my power steering seems to be acting out a little.

every time when i start the car i can quite clearly hear what i think is a pump, for about 1sec, but sometimes the steering is actually still very stiff (not every time).

when its stiff its nowhere near the steering of my mates e36. i actually need to use strength to steer while the car is stationary.

also when i steer it stationary quite quick every now and then i can hear a funny squeaky noise also for about 1 sec.

i checked the fluid in the power steering reservoir - its at the right level.

any ideas what should i check next?

I think the pump itself is the problem sadly,
Ive felt exactly this on other bmws and it was always the servo pump
