a slightly different tyre thread to the norm, no mention of budget -mid range brands, toyo, etc please
but whats the thoughts on the very best/most suited "premium" tyre model on an e30, if there was one to choose ?

For road use only, Michelin PE2/PS3.
I've used on multiple cars- always the best option IMO.

Sadly not available in 205/55/15, 205/50/16 or 225/45/16.Budgie325 wrote:For road use only, Michelin PE2/PS3.

The correct tyres sizes for an E30.
Continental sport contact 2 are available in the two 16" sizes above and are the best you will get for a road tyre in those sizes.

The best tyres to buy are Michelin Pilot Super Sports but they don't come in E30 sizes.
Count yourself lucky you don't own a Bugatti Veyron. The price for Michelin Pilot Sports all round I think is £20k.

The only tyre better than a conti sport contact imo is a michelin pilot sport and only just.polsta wrote:do you think theyd be a good choice barry?

Ive have had the conti's in 2's 3's, 5's 5P's and E46 M3 specific types on all manor of BMW's and rate them very highly!
I've also had Mich PS and PS2's on a few E46's are rate them.
But for 205/55/15 its a real problem! I managed to get a set of michelin pilot exaltos which are pretty good for mine but i think these are now discontinued in that size.
Proper concours E30's generally seem to have old period tyres like Goodyear NCT2's, Uniroyal's that E30's had when new.
I need to find a set of matching decent brand 205/55/15 front and 225/50/15 rear for my BBS RS's which is near impossible!

Yes they do, seldom a matching set, usually an assortment of budget bad boyz !
The duration of the rent is usually a good indicator of what sort of rubber is fitted. Ink costs , innit

To be fair, i see more premium tyres on E46 M3's than i do on E30's but then most E30's are scrap now.pacerpete wrote:pony wrote:Do some E46 M3 owners really fit these tyres ? I need pictures to really believe it.bss325i wrote: Sonar's or Triangle FTW!

^^^^^ You jest surely. Every Avon I've ever had have been ditch finders!!
My current e39 had ZZ3's on it and the traction light was never off for more than 30 seconds even in the dry when pushing on. In the wet it was positively shite!
I'm with Barry on the Continetals. I've had them on various cars and never a drama has been had. The only issue I would have with them is wear rate. Not had the 5's but certainly with the 2's and 3's, I wasn't getting many miles out of a set. Which is probably why they are so good. Softer compound = better grip but higher wear rate.
Currently trialling a set of Khumos and I have to say, at the price they were, I'm not seeing much difference between them and the Conti 3's I had on my last 530i. Only time will tell if the wear rate is better.

I can vouch for the Avons being terrible in the wet as well. I had a full set of ZV5's fitted on mine and in the dry happy days, in the wet it was all over the shop.

i bought a set of Pilot sport 3 in December (205/50/16) for my alpinas so i'm going to say your are incorrect. i also used pilot exalto PE2 before on 205/55/15 but these are not readily available anymorebss325i wrote:Sadly not available in 205/55/15, 205/50/16 or 225/45/16.Budgie325 wrote:For road use only, Michelin PE2/PS3.

you cant beat a premium michelin or conti for dry and wet allround capability. i would not consider anything other than Michelin or conti

I stand corrected! I did not know you could get 205/50/16's in Michelin, but thats great news!reggid wrote:i bought a set of Pilot sport 3 in December (205/50/16) for my alpinas so i'm going to say your are incorrect. i also used pilot exalto PE2 before but these not readily availablebss325i wrote:Sadly not available in 205/55/15, 205/50/16 or 225/45/16.Budgie325 wrote:For road use only, Michelin PE2/PS3.

Just a shame they dont do 225/45/16 for the staggered set up.
Agreed on the conti for wet use, i was VERY impressed with them in the wet!
All i ever fit to my cars are conti or mich.

the whole reason i avoided the staggered alpinas is there are no good tyres in the correct size to put on the rear.bss325i wrote:I stand corrected! the pilot sport 3 are not better than PS2 as the naming would suggest though (price hints at where they stand in the heirachy), they are much like the PE2 and are an excellent choice but dont expect alot of miles out of them as the rears on mine wont last more than 2 years;)

Another vote here for Conti's - expensive but you get what you pay for.

Never had a problem with Falkens in the wet or any other road condition.
Same can be said of the Hankooks(sic) I am now running.
Both in the correct size.
At the end of the day, if you drive like a twat in bad conditions, weather or tyres themselves,
then you are going to get problems whatever tyre choice you make.
