I wonder if anyone can shed any light on a C2 Alpina that i discovered under a cover partially restored in a yard. The owner claims its B134HRA which was the first Sytner C2 and was used as the offical press car at its launch. I didnt get to look at the VIN and there was no plate on the car. It still has the Alpina front spoiler, interior, steering wheel and white alpina wheels.
Does anyone know the history of the car? Was i looking at the genuine article? or was he just spinning me a line?

Yes B134HRA is the first Sytner converted C2 2.5, the early 185 BHP/179lbft version based on the 323i which used a 525 Eta block, 323i crankshaft and 323i head to get 25** cc (I cant remember exactly but its over 2500cc). A white 4dr car which when first built had a normal 5 speed overdrive gearbox and 3.45 ratio LSD but was soon changed to a 5 speed "dog leg" sport gearbox and 3.25 final drive.
I have in one of my Alpina books 2 contemporary magazine road tests and from what i can make out in the black and white photos is that it has white painted wheels and "Highback" genuine recaros in the Alpina striped cloth (Same as the seats in old skools recently purchased C2 2.7)
Worth saving!

Excellent! From what i could see as i got the bloke to pull back the cover it has the same interior as you described. The deep front spoiler has Alpina written on the bottom left hand side. Its a white car and from the guy told me was pretty ripe but a fair amount of work has been carried out. It did look a sorry state though sat outside with flat tyres etc but it did have a decent car cover on it. He showed me pics of the car in the Alpina Portfolio book which showed it as a 2 door which this one is. The guy is a trimmer and is repairing the seats i bought from Sam325i yesterday. So when i go back to collect the seat ill have another good look and ask him if i can take a pic. He also had a touring in the corner which had a bad front end smash..it still had its bbs and full black leather interior.
Its amazing what turns up when you least expect it!!

The odd thing about B134HRA is that it was quoted as having an 84mm bore, a 75mm stroke and 2494cc, just like a 325i - but 6 months before they came out.

It should be 2554cc. I've no idea why they were quoting 325i engine specs in 1984.

If your refering to the F reg C2 2.7 then most if not all sytner C2 2.7's still have the base cars identity on the V5 log book.stevotheevo wrote:ringer ???
If your refering to the B reg C2 2.5 then something is not quite right as it should be a 4dr not a 2dr.
A reshell maybe or something more sinister?

Simliar bore and stroke to a Hartge H26 in 1984 aslo often quoted with 75mm stroke.Andyboy wrote:The odd thing about B134HRA is that it was quoted as having an 84mm bore, a 75mm stroke and 2494cc, just like a 325i - but 6 months before they came out.

I reckon they were getting back door cranks from BMW! Alpina have been doing engine development for BMW for years - the 4.6 X5 engine is one case in point.
B134HRA was a white 4 door with colour coded white Alpina wheels, white sills, gold pinstripes and cloth trim on proper Recaros with single stripe Aplina trim. It also doesn't come up on the DVLA register.............

Ill have a proper look later in the week. This is only a claim by the owner though he did mention that the car had been registered and he'd been unable to verify any performance figures from Sytner due to it being a launch/press car and was tweeked in order to gain better reviews..which does happen! Ill ask if i can take some pics and remove the cover completely so i can see it more clearly. I shall take another look at the book which features the car to double check if its a 2 or 4 door..got me doubting myself now! It does have the correct interior and wheels and is also sporting a pair of Zender side skirts though these arent shown in the book.
Ill try and find out a bit more.....

Hard to say, it's just a rumour. But the Alpina M30's used the raised piston crown idea long before the 325i.
As for the X5 4.6............
BMW were farting about trying to get the M5 V8 to work in the X5 but after ages messing around with cam profiles they were getting nowhere - the engine characteristics were all wrong.
Old man Bovensiepen turned up at the Four Cylinder one day and rather than going up to meet BMW Brass, asked them all to come down to the car park. There he showed them the prototype Alpina X5, and BMW Brass all drove it.
BMW bought the design and the rights to the 4.6 motor, so the X5 4.6 is the Alpina that never was. Absolutely true story as told to me by Kris Odwarka at Buchloe.
