I have bought a cheap little digital voltmeter from Hong Kong with orange display to install into the dash. It has two wires red and black. What is the best component to splice it into for an accurate readout?

Tap into the radio wires. You want it from somewhere switched, so that it doesn't kill the battery.

You also want it somewhere where the voltage (and the display) doesn't bounce up and down in time to the beat, and a power feed to a radio isn't really the place to find this.
Purple or green wire at the plug from the ignition switch should do.
