Megasquirt to laptop cable

Afternoon all. Wonder if anybody with MS experience can advise on a cable to connect laptop and MS? Wasted a couple of days trying to get a usb to 9 pin working and have finally decided its useless. Went to maplins and bought 15 pin to 9 pin adapter. Hooked it up through a cheap ebay 9pin male/male adapter. when i power up the ms through the cars ignition my screen resolution changes (so something is happening) but tuner studio is still not detecting the MS. Should this setup of cable/adapters work with messing with drivers or something? I dont have a pc card connection on my laptop so not sure if there is any other alternatives.

Have you tried the communications menu at the top of tuner studio, then settings, then hit detect. Make sure you have installed the drivers for the usb-com port adaptor before hand

By the way the 15 pin is a VGA connector for a screen, ul need to use the USB to 9 pin adaptor but will need the correct driver, normally its a straight through db9 male to femail cable used.

Thanks very much for your replies. Have tried various drivers that apparently work with non prolific chipped usb/db9 adapters and non have worked although no faults in device manager. have adjusted port settings as required for ms and I am sure I am using the correct com port. I read online that these cables are often fitted with faulty chips and are not that good anyway for tuning so decided to give up on it.

Next I tried the db9 to db15 adapter and as said before the screen resolution changed when I powered up the MS but tuner studio still does not detect.

Been messing about with this since Saturday and not even sure if this db15/db9 adapter will work so if anybody has had success with this setup I would be grateful if you would let me know.

Also trying to resuscitate my old laptop which died of alcohol poisoning a couple of years ago as this has a pc card slot but a half blind albino tried to fix it before and I dont think he knew what he was doing.

Sorry posted that before i saw your reply. The problem is that my laptop doesnt have a db9 and had a look at the usb to db9 in maplins and looks the same type as mine. also they dont have a driver for windows 7.

Ok so the 15 pin with adapter wont work then?

Don't think it will has it got 3 rows of pins? I just checked my adaptor plunged it in to my comp windows 7 x64 and it downloaded drivers on its own, but by the looks mine is based on the prolific chip. Think ATS what you gunna want to get hold of.

I added more to last post. Try Phil at extraefi.co.UK he can prob hook you up with an adaptor that's known to work. Or get a megasquirt 3 CPU to drop in it that has built in USB
