Got a leaky gearbox...

Looks like its coming from the point where the prop connects to the gear box and I seem to recall someone saying there is a seal there?

What do I need to do to fix it and what sort of cost etc?

Thanks
:D

There is a good chance its the bo selecta seal.

Which is number 16 in the above diagram.

So which seal is the selector one on the diagram? I feel like a tech 1 sport owner right now with these questions

And matt, which do you do as I might have to pop into Leicester branch for some

As maggs says, it's number 16. FEBI do them for a lot less than the dealer.

We do the main g/box seals but I can't cross the OE number or Febi number for the shaft seal to anything we keep in stock.

Will let you know next week mate :D

Will it cause much issue if left for a week or is it something that needs tackling straight the way?

People often mistake the gearbox leak from the selector shaft seal as a leak from the output shaft seal as the selector shaft seal leaks down onto the rotating output shaft flange and make a nice mess flicking it all around the back of the gearbox.

^^^ This. 95% of E30 gearbox oil leaks are the selector seal and the rotating doughnut does a good job of spreading it everywhere. 95% of E30s have leaking gearboxes :(

Cheers guys. Need to get one ordered then, might get 2 ordered and replace the one on mine too if it needs it. Looks like a straight forward job. I assume tere is no 'special' kit required for it?

Trying to remove the old seal with the box in the car is epically sad. The council move is to tap another one in , that'll stop the coooont leaking :)

Ideal opportunity to replace the worn knuckle or if you are tight :) at least the 'sponge' pad.

I have a spare box sitting around which i'll quickly familiarise myself with before attempting it under the car.
I also have a pit which makes life alot easier :D

The knuckle is the part that connects the gear linkage to the selector shaft. They are fooooked in 95% of cases . The foam pad fits inside and is primarily to isolate vibration from the linkage but also stiffens it up. The old pad you remove will have disintegrated into an oily mess.

You need to remove the knuckle to access the seal . Assuming the knuckle is the original one, it will have the metal band holding the pin in place, removing the band with the gearbox and zaust in situ is nearly as pleasant as removing the old seal
:(
Assuming this is your skanky old touring , I would be regularly checking the gearbox oil level and spend my afternoon doing something more pleasant and productive :)

Noooo, not the touring, that thing could get foooooked if it thinks im treating it to luxury items like seals...

Its for a friend who bought that 4 door of Topless. He noticed a little drop of oil on his drive and started panicking. Its something he'll want sorting so I will do it once the car comes to mine. He works away on rotation so it will be with me for 8 weeks shortly winkeye

A small flat blade screw driver with about 3-4mm tip will see the seal pop out and a 15mm deep six sided socket to tap the new one in.

There is a specific BMW tool for doing this job but its crap and the above works better and is quicker.

Have fun with the knuckle!
