I just realised I have the original address for the original owner for the vehicle in question. But what on Earth do I say to him when I write a letter ? Is there a way of getting his phone number or email address ? And that is depending on the original owner having not moved house or flat ?

its not rocket science is it?you have the internet now days!,i used to go to the library in the 1980's when i first started doing this looking in phone books for the area of last owner, ring directory inqs etc get in the car and drive to the address and ask about,i did find if it was a females name on the v5 and thay got married then you get a name change to tackle as well so off to the records office,it can take time!i also found anyone who owned the car for only a short time wasnt worth chaseing.ive traced people back to the 1960's.sometimes you do upset some people with bad memoreys of that car,but mostly good times come back ive been givern past photos, servive info and spares for the cars ive owned from past owners.last year i found an owner of a car i still own who i treid finging back in the early 1990's when i first brought it at that time i grew a blank with being to far to visit etc,now days i have the internet so on face book i put his name in it being an odd one at that,to get a reply 30mins latter saying it was him giveing me the reg number of the car i was asking after.cleared up a lot about the cars history!.

My worry when tracing a previous owner to my M3 CS is they might get annoyed as to how I got their address or found them ? I only have his address. No idea whether currently lives there. Lives outside of London. And I don't know his first name.

you got the first details via the dvla from a copy of the log book thay thay themself filled in when thay first obtained the car them there will all ways be a paper trail to were thay are now it can take time and effert,as i said people who owned the car for a long time always welcomed you and talked about their time with the car and intreasted in it now days,
had a few negitive replys.
we traced a mates car and found the former keeper parents still liveing at the address only to told he had taken his life in that car nice!was only glade we didnt have the car with us at the time.but we was told full details about it o'well move on to the next owner!
i done all my mk1&2 escort mexico's and RS2000's 2.8inj capri's 105E anglia and most of my old fords never did my E30 due to it only haveing two otheir owners and in my eyes to newer car i owned that for ten years and would love who ever has it now to contact me if they wish.
have ago and see how you get on,would you turn down new old stock oem parts as the person still has bits in the garage from that car or spare keys etc?

Yeah I got the dude's address. I know his surname and first initial. This is because I am the third owner.
The original owner had owned from October 2006 to December 2007.
I remember trying Facebook but I could not find anything. I will have another go. I am not sure on his first name. I know he was in the British Armed Forces. Would be really nice should he have a copy of the Running-In Service which was done by a BMW Dealer in Germany so I can complete the service history as was sold as BMW Approved Used Car to the 2nd owner. BMW Dealers usually throw away any service history for their BMW Approved Used Cars.
