Just replied to a thread and it reminded me of something I was going to put on here.

I went to go and buy a standard rear section for my chromie the other day, only to be told, pattern ones are NLA the only ones you can buy are genuine bmw at £325. Can anyone (zaust) confirm or deny this?

I can confirm this is an issue! It's now the same situation for the 318is, even guy at local exhaust centre was suprised.
How much are the custom stainless places quoting for a full system these days, last one I bought was about 10 years ago at £400, worth having when bm want £360 for a front box!

Exactly what I thought. Tbh I've not got a quote yet but considering you must be talking way over £600 for a standard full system it must be comparable in cost.

Tried euro car parts, found part online, was even able to add to basket and pay in full! But to be sure I called them up to check and was told part was no longer available now or in future!

I ended up getting a good secondhand exhaust for an iS. Still haven't got a backbox though.

I was going to get an aftermarket stainless, but I've seen some only last a few years. If that's the case, as expensive as it might be, an OEM dealer exhaust may be on my shopping list.

I have a complete excellent prefacelift 325 exhaust here with the correct angled tailpipes. £125 the full system :)

Perhaps we should remember that the youngest E30's are now in their 20th year.

Just how many other manufacturer's are still able to supply OEM exhausts?

OK,BMW's price looks expensive, but at least it is available.....

No question. It never fails to amaze me how many parts bmw still stock for a nearly 30 year old car.

I'm now just questioning the sense in buying a full mild steel system at dealer prices when you can pay a little bit more for a stainless one that will never really deteriorate.

And will likely last another 20 odd years, even if the car doesn't!

Cheers pacer. Mines a 320 with the single outlet. I think I can limp my one on for the time being until I get the cash up together for a stainless. It was purely because I've just finished my resto so I thought for an extra £40-£50 why not. How far out was that guess!

You thought a genuine BMW back section would be 40 or 50 ? I bought a new bosal one a while back and even that was 160 odd I think

Nooooo lol I thought a pattern back box would be a sensible price and didn't realise you couldn't buy them any more.

God knows what you were expecting for 30 notes or why you would consider putting a 30 quid exhaust on a restored 325i, don't scrimp on finishing touches, especially on something like the exhaust

Firstly, for £40 or £50 it will be fine for what I need it for which is one day. As i have said earlier ill now wait until i have the cash for a stainless pipe. Secondly where have I said its a 325? It's a prefacelift 320. Thirdly I think you have totally got the wrong end of the stick by not reading the thread correctly. I was only asking if anyone else had heard they had stopped making pattern exhausts.

Might be an idea to read to the top of the thread next time mate :D

I'm hoping both my E30s do, hence considering buying a genuine part.

I almost bought an E46 330i a few years back, so glad I didn't spunk £10k on one now 8O

Pattern 325i exhausts (rear section) are easily found on eBay for £50 delivered from Germany. There is a supplier called ETS that does them.

Fits fine, sounds OK, not as good a OEM but for £50 you can't complain.

Have you looked at the internet? :?

And in the scheme of things, BMW's prices are perfectly reasonable IMO. You can go to your local exhaust place and have some poorly made piece of Timax sh!te fitted for £175 that will last last 3-4 years. Or cough up the shekels and get a genuine exhaust that will fit perfectly, sound great, is efficient and will last the best part of 20. You do the math.

Dude that's the point of the thread. They don't make pattern exhausts in this country anymore as far as I can tell. I wanted to know if anyone else had found this.
I did the math and personally I'd rather have spent £50 on a box that ultimately I'm going to change for stainless when I have the money. This was purely to tidy the car up for my wedding day.

I'm sure the quality of an oem exhaust is a bit better however judging by my e46 I doubt it will last as long as the one that's on there now. I guarantee they are not made to the standard they were 20 years ago. As for the price if it was £150 for the whole system pattern, I would have considered replacing it just because the old one is a bit tatty. At over £600 ill get some hi temp out and patch it up.

Maybe I should be asking for a pay rise :D

You may well be right there. My E30's backbox lasted 18.5 years whilst my E36 only just scraped 9 years. :(

Good luck with whatever you decide. :)
