They will be illegal to use on the public roads in the UK.

Reason:

The spacing between the "H7" & "20".

The group "H720" would be classed as group 1, While "LPR" would be group 2. The law states that the space between each letter/number in a group must be 11mm.

Does this also apply to private plates then? They are always spaced out all over the place

the rules regarding numberplates are strict, other than standard sized and spaced numberplates, nothing else is allowed.you can get away with other stuff but depends how easy it is to read and the mood of any policeman that see's you winkeye ive seen mates get a 21 day ticket to have numberplates changed because they'd 'adjusted' them.

yeah they definately are illegal mate. the font is incorrect (should be made using the "charles wright" font) spacings are out and you cant have any extra stickers within the registration area. (ive been making plates for about 6 years now)

having said that, i have german plates on my car and dont get any grief

From the DVLA Website...

NUMBER PLATES FITTED BEFORE 1 SEPTEMBER 2001

Number plates fitted before 1 September 2001 must display characters that meet the dimensions shown in one of the two groups below

Characters Group 1
Height 89mm
Width (except the figure 1or letter l) 64mm
Stroke 16mm
Space between characters 13mm
Space between groups 38mm
Side margins (minimum) 13mm
Space between vertical lines 19mm

The law states that

You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers
Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).

Just from a curiosity point of view...is there anything to stop you registering your car in Germany and having a genuine plate? Probably a bit expensive to insure a car from Germany though:p

In that case my friend, you're bang out of luck. Post 09/01 you have to have the boggo issue XX51 XXX plate with government font and spacing;);)

Incidently, d'ya know it's the same offence as having no plate at all? Might as well just have blank plates to confuse people:p

I had a German registered E34 all legal in Germany, then came back to Uk with it, but after the insurance sticker on the number plate expired, sure enough i had a tug from Bill. 8O

It turned out this copper was ex Armed Forces stationed in Osnabrook Germany, he knew every trick !!!!!!!!!!!!, so off to dvla to uk register the car !!!!!!!!!!! :(
Beware, if you get a copper like i did, :( sure as bratwurst is bratwurst he'll do you. :-x

I too have german number plates from germanplates.com but I left the spacing standard to reduce the likelyhood of a pull by the rozzers.

I've had mine on for about 5 months now without so much as a passing glance from plod (that's probably jinxed it now  ).

I even managed to dodge a fine for an expired parking ticket, I came back to the car late and spotted a traffic warden with his book out looking over the car. When he looked at the german plates he put his book away and walked off !. Bonus :D , that saved me the cost of the plates alone.

Cheers,

Iain T
