I remember many moons ago getting an "Ansa exhaust" for an m10 316 very cheap, that said, everything seemed cheap 15 years ago!

Hi all, front box (or is it a cat?) on the "is" has a nasty vibration between 3 and 4000rpm, replacement looks to be £250, wondered if it was worth upgrading the whole thing to a performance item? Any recommendations?

IMO you will not gain any performance advantage by fitting a non standard exhaust. A good second hand one would solve your problem for less that £250.

Not sure i fancy putting another old exhaust on to replace mine and 318is stuff seems thin on the ground, mine isn't rotten through but baffles are rattling. They are no longer available at £250 non gen, bmw want £360 for the front box so was thinking if there was a performance exhaust on the market it would be worth replacing the lot, even assuming no power gains would be had, do supersprint still do one or scorpion maybe?

Jetex do one. Try euro performance or lark speed. Front and rear box about 150 I think.

Make that 189 for the half system. It says cat models but they fit non cat as the two bolt flange is in the same place

Thanks for the help but I think the Jetex is from front box "or" cat back, the bolted flange on mine is after the knackered box in question, I will give euro a call tomorrow to be sure. And thanks again for the info!

A bosal system exists for this type via a mr tyre site but not the piece you require which is front pipe and cat.
Depentant on age I'm sure you can go away with the cat if pre 1992 but don't quote me on that

It's very unlikely a 318iS will have a cat fitted. It was an option when new, but very few (if any) buyers ticked the box - cats were only required from Aug 92, the iS model was 90-91. I remember a member on here who mainly dealt with the iS said he'd never seen a cat fitted to one.
Any 'performance' exhausts don't tend to do much for the iS as BMW did a pretty good job in first place, so the ideal exhaust to get would be a genuine OEM one. A decent stainless system may last well, but won't add much other than noise, and the genuine OEM systems seem to be good for 15+ years anyway - both my E30s had their original exhausts until this year, so that's 20 and 22 years!
Obviously an OEM exhaust won't be cheap, but neither is a decent stainless one - I'd steer clear of the cheap stainless systems as they're sold cheap for a reason and don't tend to last too well.

Just to clarify, on the front pipe the box that is just behind the flange join is a silencer?
Have not seen any lambda sensor wires on mine, sorry to hijack a thread but this is a issue I'm facing at some point!

The front box is a silencer. Cat would be before that if fitted. Jetex is a two piece half system including both boxes.

From what I can tell it shows a bolted flange where it meets, the only bolted flange on my exhaust is after the first silencer. It seems odd as it would then add an extra silencer!? If it was to replace the first box it would need to be a twin pipe? As the next joint forward is the manifold, 4 into 2.

Hope this pic works, shows m42 with manifold and first section fitted, pic too left shows Jetex system, it looks to me like it bolts up to that first silencer?

Yeah that's what I thought the cat was( the last pic ). The pipe you have an issue with looks like a front pipe and its from the bottom of the manifold, as two pipes. Lots of extensions to get to! One of many issues on my list for mine! Thanks for your help
