It's a possibility, but the only way to be certain is to take the cluster out, open it up, and check them! This will also tell you which type of batteries you have.
Before you do that, check that the C101 engine loom connector locking ring is turned completely home, and the plug and socket are fully together.

Just dragging this one back up

I'v finally got round to pull the cluster out to test the batteries,

Image

measured them and both (after being in the freezer) and they are putting out 2.85,
which says to me that their ok..? yeah?

i'v also checked all the connections on the C101 plug and everything seems to be in order

any other ideas?

Yeah the temp sensor is in the head,
But strangely, the temp gauge seems to be working now,
but the rev counter dances around once the ignition is on, then it just "drops off"

Check the brass nuts on the back of the gauge(s), as they often work loose.

Also check all solder joints on the board - they should all be nice and shiny, and not dull and crystalline.

The Lithium batteries sound OK to me, at 2.85V.

Both nuts are nice and tight,
And the entire board still looks factory fresh.

Check all the connections to the ignition coil are tight, as any spurious connections will cause spikes in the rev counter circuit.

Probably also worth measuring the resistance of the HT leads - all should read under 10 kilohms, and check that the dizzy cap and rotor arm are in good condition.
