Hi All,
The radiator fan has seized on my M52 conversion, the car was converted by another zoner so I'm not really familiar with what has been done. The fan is from a e36 compact and seems to be creatively "hung" in front of the radiator. It got very hot, smelt of burnt plastic and will not spin freely.
The question I have is what is the best fan to replace this with. Hopefully my local garage will be fitting it, but I'm concerned it could be challenging their knowledge. Any advise on what is involved with swapping the fan would be much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.
Tony
EDIT: Is this the fan I need?

Hi Dan, Alas I don't have much choice which garage, but I only need a temporary fix to get it to someone who knows what they are doing.
Forgive my ignorance the fan I listed is a e36 from gsf which is nla, just trying to figure out what the best replacement is.
Thanks for the replys.

Tony, IIRC , all E36 fans are 'pullers' that fit between the rad and the engine, they will not be suitable for your application as there is no room. Any pics of what you have fitted ? cableties/ scotchloks and all, don't be shy !pony2 wrote:Hi Dan, Alas I don't have much choice which garage, but I only need a temporary fix to get it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Thats an aftermarket universal fan, looks like you also need a new radiator as its falling to bits. Does it run off a rad temp switch or is it an ignition on full speed ahead affair?
Its fixed to the radiator by plastic fixing straps, a bit like cable ties. The fans are not terribly bad, but if its on all the time it will be getting hot and burn out a lot quicker than normal.
Ive fitted these to a few conversion and they are ok - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200519242706? ... 1423.l2649
Airflow is the key, a corroded/blocked radiator will only help the fan burn out quicker

Thanks Dan, I believe it runs of a temperature switch - comes on when the temp gague is half way. Cheers for the link.
Yeah the rad does look a bit gone, add it to the very long list of things wrong with this car.

You can (could?) still buy the aircon fan mounting kit from BMW for not alot of money. If buying a second hand aircon fan make sure the resistor for lo / high works as mine only comes on at high!

I have a new rad , 80/88 fan switch and 80 thrmostat.
My fan comes on at just over halfway when idling from cold but if i go for a long'ish drive it doesn't come one until 3/4 mark which is a bit scary.
