It should physically fit fine, and will probably work fairly well but may need rejetting for the larger engine to work at its best.

And do you know the things it should come with? The weber, manifold and air filter?

All E30 M10 engined cars were a 1766cc ( 1.8 ) the 316 was the carburater model where as the 318i was the injected model. but both used the same 1766cc engine so it will bolt straight on and will not need rejetted

the manifold may be different. either that or it should come with an adapter plate to bolt it onto a standard manifold.
as long as all the throttle linkage is complete it should be good to go.
might be worth asking him to take note of any pipework for you to where it runs to extra.
also the choke linkage and cable will be needed

Also try and get the matching air filter assembly, and ideally, the choke and throttle cables.

Yes, get as many of the original fittings as possible.
They are critical to the proper functioning of the carb, and probably expensive to buy from a Weber concessionaire.

Depends where you go; try Weber Concessionaires www.webcon.co.uk, or you may get lucky down at your local motor factors or on E-bay, here, an autojumble, or the scrappy...

Not sure if its worth the hassle to be honest, he wants £60 for the weber and the missing bits could set me back a fair bit!

I'd say that's a fair deal - you should be able to pick up the cable(s) for a tenner or so, and it may only need the throttle cable, assuming it's got an automatic choke.
You may even be able to adapt your present one to fit.

The aftermarket mesh air filter indeed looks battered, but the carb itself is probably OK.

No, you could unbolt the filter cover and bend it back out - clean out the filter gauze/foam while you're at it.
If he's cut the cables (bozo
!), then you'll need those, unless you can adapt your existing ones to fit. Otherwise, it's probably complete.

Probably because he couldn't be arsed with the arduous 10 minute task of unscrewing them properly!

No problem. The Webers usually give better driveability and easier starting compared to the standard Pierburg.
Don't expect much extra performance though if your existing carb is in good condition.
You may need to renew some of the gaskets, e.g., the inlet manifold to cylinder head one, to avoid air leaks.

Will air leaks in the pipes to my current carb cause the car to turn itself off? if so they definitely need replacing! The carb is bound to cause me problems eventually so i might as well replace it now!

Yes, any air leaks in the gaskets or hoses will cause problems, such as weakening of the mixture, lumpy idle, etc.

Check them, and if perished showing signs of cracking, then replace them. Otherwise, leave well alone if you're not experienced with carbs.

Any good motor factor should be able to supply hoses in a variety of diameters, or you could try your nearest Weber specialist.
