Hi all....

Anyone had any experience of the blown mini coopers?
I had always been told they were seriously quick cars.
That was until this morning on the way into work, after a little race with one.

And before anyone says he probably didnt know how to drive, i could hear his engine note over mine....

As far as i know my sport is standard bar a filthy green cotton filter.

Admittedly the Cooper got past me eventually, what really suprpised me was the fact he really seemed to be struggling to do so!!

Saying that, as he passed me i gave him that "how much did urs cost" sort of look, knowing my bog standard Ԛ£500 E30 just troubled a force-fed 10grand+ car winkeye

Well it put me in a good mood for the day wether it was a genuine one or not :D

hehe, thats quite cool. They are meant to be quick little cars though. 160bhp or something like that. Would have been ace if he never got past.lol. I managed to beat a golf mk2 gti in my 318is the other day and he was giving it some. Gti's are rather fast aswel.

Get a motorbike, then you can have fun outrunning 911 Turbo's.

Until it rains.

Or you have to take a passenger.

Or the road is twisty.

Well, it's a start innit?

not wanting to tread on anyone's feet here, but i don't buy it!

in my last job a consultant had a cooper s and we'd travelled from london to bournemouth and back, and london to weston-super-mare and back in our respective cars, along with a few smaller drives. suffice to say the mini shit all over my 318is.

the specs say it all really. the mini cooper s has significantly more power, more torque and weighs less. with a supercharger it has a great spread of power, and produces max torque at a lower rpm than the 318is. Off the mark and in gear times are faster. Their 0-60 is about 7s, a 318is won't do this.

What i will say is on both occasions i went out with the chap he had some gripe or another with it. first time a CD got stuck in the player, second time the aircon wasn't blowing out cold air. the car was about a year old. i still like it though, in the real world the torque makes them well nippy

as for mk2 golf's, my mate's shitty 160k-miler 8v mk2 golf was barely any slower than mine, even though it did tend to leave a bit of a smoke-screen with the amount of oil he burnt! they seem to go quicker on their death-rattle!

Say the driver was better because i would not of thought that a mini would be as fast as an M3

I have to agree with Tim on this one , My wife has a Black one and I'm sure on the bends My M3 will take it but on the open road it feels pretty quick ! I'd stick my neck out and say it would beat me . Its got lots of low down grunt then it just picks up and flies making a lovely noise too . That said I still much prefer my M3 its a fantastic car .

The standard Cooper S should be faster than a 325i to 60 and nearly as quick as an M3...
Are you sure it was a Cooper S and not a Cooper?

Hmm, I really did think mk2 gti's were fast but this one didn't have a chance and the guy was flooring it like mad. Spose it could have been f****d but it didnt come anywhere close to me! Couldn't tell you wether I noticed it was an 8v or 16v though.

One other thing I've noticed is the amount of fake Coopers S's about , I dropped the wife's off at our local BMW dealer for its first service and the service bloke was telling me lots of people fit the S bonnet and other bits as its easy and cheapish to do . So It may have been a standard car .
Just one thought .

Thats a good point, they say dont judge a book by its cover.
Although im sure a standard 1.6 wouldnt have got past me like that, you can usually tell when something you are racing is genuinly quick due to the sound, how it picks up etc.

Still considering ive been used to a wheezy 320i for the past year it was fun :)

sorry stifla but your 318is has no chance against a cooper s.my close pals are into their cars one has a modded vr6 / clio 172 /coopers s and when i had my sport me the clio and the cooper s were always very close so i cant believe your story bacause i would have destroyed any standard 318is.

sorry but I've got to agree. A cooper S should blow you away. In my old e36 2.8 I could just have them in a straight line but it was quite close.

Now I have an e30 318is and I wouldn't stand a chance.

A sorted 318is is just as quick as a 325i sport.

This all assumes it wasn't a complete spacker driving the Cooper dunnit? I mean, if my mum was in a Cooper S I could practically outrun her on my push bike.

I think some people are starting to mount thier horses already....

It wasnt from a standing start like some people seem to have assumed, we were already moving, and i didnt 'have him' as it were, i just caused him grief! :P

Well you should have known you were opening a can of worms when you started this thread making claims like that!

I presonally think it was a badged up cooper and most definately not the cooper S unless he wasn't racing and just gently nudged his foot to the throttle to whaft past your screaming chariot.
