Any help welcomed.
Also if anyone is near Brighton and fancies lending my a service light reset tool then please get in touch. Many thanks.

Service light resetting tool is a paperclip or a short piece of wire. See the relevant wiki section for what to do with it.
The most common cause of the rev counter not working is failing SI board batteries inside the instrument cluster. If this is the case, it's likely that the service lights won't reset properly either, so check this first.

Hi, thanks for that. I reckon that's my problem. I do have the inspection light on also the service indicator is flashing. Would these be working if the SI board is knackered?

What, exactly is flashing?? Never seen that before!Akky wrote: the service indicator is flashing.
If the batteries are failing, the service lights do things like give implausible combinations of lights, failure to reset, or coming back on again shortly after having been reset.
The only way to know for sure is to remove the instrument cluster, open it up, remove the SI board, put it in the freezer for fifteen minutes and measure the voltage across the batteries.

So centrally in between the speedo and rev counter sitting above the service indicator lights is a small square display. Mine flashing 'service' in orange.

There's a light that flashes in that position on UK six cylinder cars, but it's for the bulb and fluid level check panel up in the roof - and flashes 'check', not 'service'.
Where in the world are you, or more importantly, what market was your car made for, and what model is it?

If the 'check' message is flashing, there should be at least one red LED illuminated in the overhead panel. Pushing the button in the lower right corner of that panel should stop the flashing light, but leave the LED lit.
