Code readers on the E30 are 99% pointless.
What is the actual problem with the car/is there anything actually wrong with the car?

Can you offer any insight into why they are pointless?? Surely the diagnostic port is there for a reason?

Because next to no information is thrown up via the ADS interface or logged within the ECU. Fault finding on the E30 is mostly down to testing and checking components/wiring etc.JM2012 wrote:Can you offer any insight into why they are pointless??
You'll probably find that your 'error code' is in fact the reader not being able to read anything.
As diable says, it's good for resetting the SI and that's about it.JM2012 wrote:Surely the diagnostic port is there for a reason?

Fair enough, thanks.
I would still be interested to see what the code is though if anyone knows. The reader is a Peake research fcx-2 and as far as I know should have shown _ _ or NC if there were no faults.

The error codes are normally 4-digit, as shown here:

Thanks, but those are for non UK cars with the 'engine check' light according to the wiki..
Although I think I saw a thread somewhere where you can hook it up but don't really fancy starting to mess with the electrical system.

The only reason it says "Non-UK" is the lack of checklight. It's not like the UK got an exclusive range of ECUs that throw up completely different codes.

Chances are it refers to non existent emissions equipment - possibly tank vent valve.JM2012 wrote:Fair enough, thanks.

Not overly helpful really...Grrrmachine wrote:The only reason it says "Non-UK" is the lack of checklight. It's not like the UK got an exclusive range of ECUs that throw up completely different codes.
How can I check the error codes then if I don't have the check light other than the code reader I used??
Are there other code readers that would provide 4 digit codes?

You're applying the wrong thinking to the car. The E30, while having an ECU, is not a modern engine - it's not even OBD II, so if you think fault-finding is a matter of plugging in a device and being told "X is wrong, Y is fine" then you're going to have a very troublesome E30 ownership.JM2012 wrote:Not overly helpful really...Grrrmachine wrote:The only reason it says "Non-UK" is the lack of checklight. I've got a checklight on mine; never bothered using it to detect codes, because they don't tell you anything anyway.

I'm not using it as a hard fast rule to fault finding. As per my first post I was just curious to know what the code was.

I'm going to quote myself:
If you do have problems then this is the fault code reader you need on an E30.
Just because some random code reader has thrown up random unrelated error it does not mean that there is an issue with the car. As has been stated the ECUs in these cars pretty much don't fault log and when they do they are checked via the check light / a 12v bulb. The Service Port is just that, a port for resetting service information.
