Why do you want to change them? Brown plug is just for instruments anyway, and blue plug should only be touched if you're having overfuelling issues.

They are NOT easy to access on an M40

when in static traffic my temp guage shoots up, but my engine does not seem to actully be overheating i.e no huge amounts of steam or pressure with the rad cap removed when the guage says in over heating, while on the move its fine.

No sign of head gasket failer and no rad leaks.

its the brown one i want to change really but thought they would be close to each other so may as well change the blue one as well.

Also a weird one is that my guage may read only half i'll pull up go in to the shops, come back out put the ignition to the first point and the guage reads max, sometimes if i slap the dash the needle changes slighty

they are hidden under the inlet manifold .take the top part off and you should be able to see them .you may want to tighten the brass nut on the back of the temp gauge.

If you've read the Wiki, you'll see that the gauge only covers a few degrees, so the needle moving to max doesn't indicate massive volcanic heat.

It's far more likely that there is actually an issue with your cooling system than there is with either of your plugs.

By the way, great info on "low temp gauge" issue in the Cooling section. Mine settles at around 1/4 mark, so I was wondering whether it was overcooling or not lol :) Good stuff!
