Going to change my gearbox/diff oil next week, so need to buy all the fluids now.

After reading this... > http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/Oil

I'm getting Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75W for the gearbox and I don't know whether I have LSD or not, so would it be ok to go for Castrol 75W140 for the diff?

It's LS specific oil, but I've read that you can use them in open diffs too?

Advice?

No, it's the wrong grade for an open diff, which uses 75W90.

Work out what diff you've got, then buy the right oil. They make different grades for a reason.

To check if you have an LSD or an open diff, raise both back wheels clear of the ground.Turn one rear wheel by hand, and ask your helper to observe which way the other back wheel is turning.

Report your findings for further help.

Grrrmachine, yeah I guess you're right ;)

Thanks for the help daimlerman, but I've done a bit of Google'ing after posting this, so...if I spin one rear wheel in one direction and the other one goes in the same way, then I've got an LSD.

If the other wheel goes the opposite direction, then I've got an open diff.

Correct?

Also read about diff tags and found it on mine, but it's all rusted and you can't see anything, so it's pretty useless...

That's right,so now you know that, you can decide what type of oil to pour in...
BTW,remove the fill plug BEFORE removing the drain plug, better to have disgusting old oil than no oil at all!

Checked today, turns out I've got LSD :D

Ordered Fluchs Sintofluid for the gearbox and Castrol Syntrax 75W140 for the diff - a job for this weekend!
