Just got a 318is and am finding that anywhere below 2000rpm in every gear there is a bit of a judder (the sort of feeling you get when you are in too higher gear below 1000rpm in any other car!) This judder does not happen under heavy acceleration, only gentle throttle or maintaining the current speed.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Only thing 'not normal' is that i'm currently running the car with no thermostat so its typically sitting around the 60 degree mark.

Well get a thermostat in there pronto a) to see if it improves things, and b) to avoid damaging your engine further.
Why do people think cooler is better? The idea is to run an engine as hot as possible, without local boiling occurring.

Definitely agree that cooler is not better. Long and short of it is that it needs timing chain work (but the rocker cover is stuck on at the moment) - so rather than putting a new therm on now I thought i'd wait a couple of weeks until my Helical repair kit arrives.

If you think I should put it on asap then tell me, I'm totally new to E30's and a bit of an engine noob!!

Cheers
