Hi,
I have recently replaced the V belts and PS fluid and PS hoses on my E30 318i.
Now at full lock the pump makes a grinding noise. First I thought that one element just rubs on another, but having my mate turning the steering wheel I noticed that when in full lock the power steering pump just stops spinning and makes that grinding noise.
Same happens at both ends, left and right.
There's no noise with the front wheels off the ground, so I assume it's too much for the pump to ask to turn the wheels that little bit extra when at full lock.
I know you shouldn't hold the steering wheel at full lock position, but I don't recall ever having this problem before so I'd like to troubleshoot it.
First thing that springs to my mind is the V belt (that I've replaced) being either too tight or too loose. I've reinstalled as per my Haynes manual with the correct belt deflection, but still no joy.
So I guess it could be just a faulty pump, but it is coincidental that it seems to start making the noise after I replaced the hoses, fluid, belts and other pieces.
I have also replaced the whole front suspension parts including nearly all steering parts apart from the steering rack and PS pump so control arms, bushes, track rods, link rods, shocks, springs, etc. The car didn't have realignment done yet as it is currently SORN but I am booked for a MOT this Monday, therefore I'd like to get rid of the noise before that.
Please share your thoughts, Thanks
Regards,
Power Steering Pump

If the pulley stops, the belt isn't tight enough.
You may have set it to the correct tension when you fitted it, but it's likely to be considerably slacker now that it's bedded in.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I will reset the tension on the belt tonight and give it an another go. Much appreciated.
