After some advice for a friend. He has a 325i se that has developed a fault with power delivery. The car will not accelerate smoothly and surges then holds back, when the slowing down with the brakes the engine dies and I'm told that the idle is quiet poor and hunts. I have advised of a possible problem that sounds like the air flow meter or the oxygen sensor. He took the car for a good thrash down the motorway and kept it in 4th gear to keep the revs high. Since this the cars better but not solved. Does this sound like a resonable cause or something else. Any opinions welcome.
Thanks in advance.

sounds like a split hose (throttle body to air flow meter?) maybe or mixture. First thing I would do is check the mixture anyway. While your there I would check the ignition if the history is unknown I.e distributer arm/cap plugs and leads.

Thing is it sound like the good thrashing has done it some good, as if what coked up i.e. the sensors?

Maybe but doubtful TBH. An outside vote would say check the ECU temp sender (the blue one in the front of the head but this is unlikely) I think this is playing up on mine as it overfuels like mad wen cold hence won't idle, but is ok when warmed up.

how is what tested? the temp sender?
you need to look at the values of resistance at different temps *looks for bently book*
Here are the values:
(-10 +/-1C) 7000 - 11600 ohms
(+20 +/-2C) 2100 - 2900 ohms
(+80 +/-1C) 270 - 400 ohms
