So looking at this picture i will put my multimeter on the the following pins

from the middle clockwise
red on 1 black on 2
red on 1 black on 3
red on 2 black on 3
red on 3 black on 1

Im sorry to ask the question but as you said mine has got 6 pins and you have to forget about the 3 extra pins which are to do with the gearbox but how do i know what ones they are.

on the picture above i am guessing it goes clock wise round from the centre at 12 o clock to be my pin one on the sensor.

Do i then check the same pins on the plug as well in the same way?

As you said the wiki states for 3 pins plug and not the 6 i have got.

Follow the wiki guide. AFAIK, the pins on the socket are numbered, and 1,2 and 3 are the same as the 'ordinary' TPS.
Doesn't matter in the slightest which way around the meter probes go.

Here is something that might help. According to the diagram you should test pins 4,5 and 6. With the throttle closed you should have a reading of 000 (continuity) between pins 4 and 6, with the throttle half open you should have a reading of 1 on the multimeter between any of the pins and with the throttle fully open you should read 000 on the meter between pins 5 and 6. If not getting these readings readjust the TPS. Good luck with it, hope you'll get it sorted.

Well, your throttle position switch is sending the right signals.

I've just read back through four pages of this. It would make a lot more sense if you learned how to use a multimeter

So to recap, it seems that your blue temp sensor and throttle position switch are alright. The symptoms are black spark plugs and cutting out at idle, right? Have you got any ACCURATE figures on fuel consumption? Not "dunno lol about 20 miles to a fiver". How many miles to a full tank, and is it city or highway driving? We need to know if the car is really running rich, or if you're just using it around town too much.

As for the stalling or lumpy idle, the next check is to look for air leaks:

http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/inde ... n_Problems

And really, all of these problems have been covered here countless times before if you SEARCH for them, as well as being covered in the Wiki.

The main problem now is that my car starts lovely from cold
After running for a bit the idle starts to go up and down
When driving she is pulling well but as soon as you come to a stop say at a roundabout she doesn't
Hold enough revs and cuts out. She will start but then needs me to put her in drive and give it some revs or will cut out again.
I changed the plugs for a new set after seeing the others had gone black originally
I can't smell fuel anymore like originally when it was running rich.
I have checked my hoses and all seem ok. I even sprayed brake cleaner over them while the engine was running to see if I had any leaks.

It's almost definitely an air leak somewhere. Keep looking, and follow the Wiki links that have been provided throughout this thread.

Good news I have replaced a few new rubbers here and there now and is ticking over and running a dream. One problem now is though when driving the car in D with the sports box in E I don't seem to have kick down ?
In fact it doesn't seem to kick down in any mode. It did before fine and I'm wondering if its anything to do with the TPS switch when I removed it to clean it and put it back on ?
Would this of affected the kick down ?

Check the switch under the throttle pedal, including that its wire is actually connected to something.

It should be open circuit normally and short circuit when pressed (probably). The only thing I've ever found wrong with one is the wire kicked off, so I don't think I've ever had a meter on one.

It seems ok brianmooore .
I have found the following since I replaced some of the rubbers that when in park she ticks over at 1000
Which seems too fast and seems a bit spluttery when i go to pull away
When I engaged drive she ticks over at 700-800 which is ok. I'm not getting her cut out like she used to when i put in reverse

Could any of this be to do with when I went in and took TPS off and put it back on ?

I think I am nearly there with her now but just a little more tinkering I think.

What do you think brianmoooore
