help dead rev counter

i have just got my self my 1st e30 its a sound car ,but the rev counter wont work does antone have any idears?

I just fixed this problem on my M3.

It wasnt the SI board but the acutal circuit board on which the instruments are.

Go get yourself a second hand instrument cluster with similar mileage, will work out the cheapest and easiest way. Will also save you haveing to open up the cluster and change parts over. A simple case of plug & PLay.

Ask Jonb for one, he will test it for you and his prices are the most reasonable around.

If the rev counter has been dead as long as you've had the car, and just sits there doing nothing, and none of the other instruments are affected, then it is difficult to offer a diagnosis. A SI board with duff batteries can sink the pulses on their way to the tacho, but your best plan of action is probably to try another cluster, as M5pilot says. Cheapest place would be an ordinary scrapyard, rather than a specialist breaker, but of course you take your chance whether it works or no.
If you have a choice of clusters, open them up and check the batteries on the SI board. Any sign of corrosion, then leave it. If the batteries are the same size as AA batteries, they are NiCd, and will probably need changing, but if they are considerably shorter than AAs, then they are probably Lithium, and you have found a board that has been replaced by an upgraded version at some time.

Forgot to mention, my not so local scrapyard charges Ԛ£2 - Ԛ£5 for a cluster, depending on what else you are buying at the same time, and what kind of mood he's in.
