Cutting out

Hi I have a 1989 318i m40 engine. When the car is idling every now and again when I touch the throttle slightly the car cuts out. Any idea on what this could be

Typical symptom of an E30 in need of a good service! a good hunt for inlet side air leaks, a set of reconditioned injectors, and the throttle position switch adjustment set up correctly, and I'll almost guarantee your hesitation will be gone, plus there will be improvements all the way through the rev. range, as well as using less fuel.
