I bought a K&N induction kit from Steve (e30topless) and before purchasing, asked him if it includes everything required to fit to my 325i. Steve confirmed everything was included - Great. I paid for it and waited a week. I still hadn't heard anything, so sent him a message to find out what's going on. He hadn't seen that I'd paid him, so would get it in the post.
The item eventually arrived and I attempted to fit the unit. It came with the cone, the adaptor plate and the mounting bracket. I was a little concerned at first as the pictures on K&N's website included a bunch of fittings too.
I tried to fit it and couldn't get the cone to mount onto the adaptor plate properly, due to fouling on the studs from the AFM. I messaged Steve asking him if I was doing something wrong and received a bit of help. I tried again to fit it using a different method, which still wouldn't work. I went back to Steve and asked him if he definitely included all the necessary fixings, thinking perhaps you had to use slimmer nuts due to the studs, to which he replied along the lines of "Can't you just find the nuts yourself?"
I sent messages to Steve and had to wait a very long time in between replies (usually around a week) despite seeing him active posting on the forum the entire time. It got to the point that I became fed up that I requested a refund as I felt Steve hadn't sold me what was advertised (including all the necessary parts for fitting). Steve refused to refund the item as "I don't do refunds simply because i don't sell crap". I replied on Friday 7th June and re-iterated that he had mis-sold the item to me, but I have not had a response. I messaged him again on Wednesday 19th to ask for a reply, giving him the benefit of the doubt as he may have been on holiday and still have had no reply.
Steve, as a trader on E30Zone I really expected better from you. Taking so long to reply to my messages and dismissing everything I say is hardly good play. I would still like the refund as requested and I'm happy to pay for it to be sent back to you myself.
If anyone knows Steve, can they help me out please? Thanks

Dispute? maybe on your behalf,
after around 20 pm's I sold you a K&N filter and the parts to fit it to your M20, you paid (thank you) after you bid me an offer lower than the asking price and you received all that was in the picture in the advert,
the parts were in good order as stated do you not agree? well they were before you damaged the adapter for the filter...if they were not received in good order then I would refund and apologize in an instant
I will not refund you, your inability to fit 4 bolts/screws and tighten a jubilee clip is not my fault !!!

Rav: I'm sure he is - He's been a member a very long time so I respect that he must have a good reputation. I know people have lives to live, but it annoyed me that I could see he was posting on the forum while ignoring my PM's.
Steve: It is not my inability to fit 4 nuts + a jubilee clip because the parts supplied do not fit! There is literally no way that with the parts supplied, this can be used on the car. I have a lot of experience working with cars, having spent the last 6 years owning and maintaining mk1-mk3 Golfs, including a full engine conversion on a mk2 Jetta, so I think I'm capable of fitting 4 nuts.
The parts did look to be in decent condition on arrival, yes. However I certainly don't think anything I've done has caused the hairline crack on the adaptor plate. As you'll know, plastic can go brittle with age.
My point still stands that what you've sold me does not come with everything required to fit, as stated by yourself pre-sale. Surely you must be able to agree with that?

Hi Mick,
Thanks for the very kind offer! I'm down in Sheffield for a few weeks unfortunately. I'll post some pictures up shortly showing the problem.

The adapter plate has countersunk holes meaning that the adapter plate needs to be screwed to the AFM with countersunk screws that would give a flush surface - not fitted with nuts.
You need to remove the studs from the AFM and screw the adapter plate to it with countersunk screws - the cone will then fit properly flush up to the AFM.

Thanks for the useful info Rob! These are counter-sunk screws that I was not supplied with.

Was there any pics of it fitted to the car Steve removed it from? Perhaps it was fitted the same as you have it now (with the nuts on the studs rather than with the countersunk bolts).jamlid wrote:Steve: When you removed this from the car, you must have had to remove these screws to get it off??

Would not the use of Nuts, rather than counter sunk screws, be liable to cause the above?

Personally I wouldn't bother selling something like a used K&N filter as they are worth next to nothing and the sort of monkeys that buy and fit such a thing usually have no idea about cars and don't understand how to go to the local hardware store to buy nuts bolts cable ties etc and are likey to cause a head ache
It's a cheap second hand filter dude if you want everything you see in the picture via the k&n website dust the cobwebs off your wallet and go and buy a new one
Sorry to be blunt but I say it how it is

Steve would not go out of his way to send a filter for a poultry £20 if he did not believe all was o.k.
Jesus, Its only four counter sunk bolts.

It's been cleaned since
And I intend to make up a heat shield for it at some point. I had spoken to Steve and sent him photos of the problem who didn't suggest that mounting it onto the studs was the incorrect way. Plus the location of the crack is on the inside middle of the square part of the adaptor plate, not anywhere near the studs. I didn't actually notice the crack until after the 2nd attempt of fitting. I don't think the crack will be a problem in usage to be honest though.
I think some people are missing the point here - I bought the filter from a reputable trader here who confirmed everything needed to fit it was included and this was not the case. I wasted a lot of time trying to fit it a few times after Steve said I had everything I'd need.
Billgates30 has a good point - Maybe if he had any pictures of it fitted, I'd be able to see how it was mounted to the AFM.

I'm assuming that the adapter plate you have is identical to the one in the official K&N Pic ?jamlid wrote:Thanks for the useful info Rob! These are counter-sunk screws that I was not supplied with.
Steve: When you removed this from the car, you must have had to remove these screws to get it off??
Personally if I saw countersunk holes I would not have tried to fit it the way you have as its clearly not right
To be fair to Steve with the amount of parts he shifts its not suprising that occasionally the odd screw/bolt/washer/clip goes missing - he wouldnt deliberatley shaft you - new screws/nuts/washers are usually a good idea anyway and its not like they're expensive.
As has already been mentioned it could well have been fitted ( incorrectly ) with the nuts the way you have done it which is why Steve sent them with the kit

could it also be possible that as the cone filters aren't highly regarded as a good mod that Steve has thought that everything was there due to the fact that he possibly would never go to the hassle of fitting one? hence what was there with it he thought it was complete.

Look, some people are being very helpful here and some are just being arseholes. You know who you are, so grow up.
Rob: Yep, the adaptor is exactly the same. I was confused at first but as Steve had said everything was there that I needed and I could see he was reliable, I took his word for it and thought it must have been me doing something wrong. I'm sure he wouldn't deliberately shaft me, as I don't think anyone here would (bar the one or two pricks).
So I guess to try and bring this to some resolution, Steve: Can you check if you have any pictures of this when it was fitted to see how it mounted and can you check to see if you have these countersunk screws please?

Just had a look and the nearest BAPP like place is 7 miles away. So am I supposed to measure up the stud that's on the AFM for width, thread and length? I can't take a stud out to test as I obviously need it to be able to use the car, so I'd have to hope I've measured correctly when buying I guess?

They will be M6 or M.8 bolts that you need. I would imagine 16-20 mm would suffice (if you unscrew a stud see how much it unscrews by). What size spanner/socket did you use on the nuts?
Steve strips cars, so he will have sent it "as it was" on the car that it came off. Not sure which pic he sent you of it, but he may well have (more than likely, considering) sent everything that was used to attach it to the donor car, hence both parties think they are in the right. I'm sure this is an easy enough one to resolve.
Can everyone else keep it down though please? Everyone knows Steve is a good chap, but lets not all jump on the bandwagon here please so unless you have something of value to add then pipe down.
Thanks

Also, stud should screw out and can easily be screwed back in should you need to measure the depth of the threaded hole in the AFM.

Thanks Chris
The stud goes straight through so it wouldn't have to be an exact science. I'm not 100% on measuring a thread size and I have nothing more accurate than a tape measure.. I guess I can measure say, the distance across 10 threads then divide by 10 rather than actually trying to measure the distance between two?
I am interested to know from Steve how it was actually mounted to the AFM then, to clear all this up. I guess if he looks at the AFM that was removed (if it's not already been sold) and it doesn't have studs in, that answers it.
My point with this is that I'm trying to resolve a problem with something I've bought. I know I can go and buy screws myself but I shouldn't have to. I resorted to the public thread because Steve wouldn't reply to me.

What size spanner did you use on the nuts. This will tell you what size thread it is.
M5 is 8mm spanner
M6 is 10mm spanner
M 8 is 13mm spanner
M5 is 8mm spanner
M6 is 10mm spanner
M 8 is 13mm spanner

A quick search says an M 8 bolt will be a 1mm thread?

Also, metric coarse (standard in 99% of applications) will be M 8x1.25, M6 & M7 is 1.0
Metric fine is M 8x1.0 or M 8x0.75 (I'd be very very surprised if it is either of these).
The ones in your ebay ad will be correct.
