Hi,

anyone know if Alpina Gearboxes are different to non Alpina cars.
Mine is switchable auto, so is this the same as any switchable auto?

If I were to convert it to manual which gearbox would I need to keep it Pina??... dogleg??

Would lightening and balancing my flywheel improve performance without shagging up the idle running?

cheers.

As far as I can remember,C2 2.7's use the stock 'boxes as fitted to the rest of the 325i range.

So you are looking for a manual ex 325i sport 'box, which has slightly closer ratio's than a standard 325i manual box.An alternate, which will be a lot easier to find, would be a 240 'box from a 320i,ratio's are almost identical to the fabled 'sport' 'box...I have used one of these 'boxes behind my eta-based 2.7 for years with no issues at all.

Lightening the fly will improve the speed at which the engine increases speed, and reduce the time it takes to slow down again, cannot see that it will make much difference to the way the engine idles.

I seem to remember when I was a lad.... we used to lighten and balance flys on Mk1 Escorts and when it was over done the car used to wobble at idle due to not enough weight to counter balance ...or something like that :?

would you happen to know what bits I need to do the manual conversion.
How about if I had a gearbox made up?.. not totally but like could a Good Box shop improve low end pull without affecting top end speed?

thing is I aint driven her for ages and bet she will still shit me up when I do!! :D

Hi Joe, did you get my pm?

You could in theory fit a longer geared box as the 2.7 has plenty of torque!

But do it, the auto box kills your car!:)

Apart from specific Alpina Gearbox data, there's a lot of info on these topics.

For starters, Auto to Manual conversion

http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/inde ... _To_Manual

Manual gearbox ratios:

http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/inde ... ain#Manual

(As daimlerman says, the Getrag 240 fitted to the 320i is perfectly adequate for a 200hp motor)

And info on the Flywheel:

http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/inde ... 0#Flywheel

Lightening the flywheel on the M20 engine is very popular, and if done by a competent machine shop you'll have no issues with wobbling - this is BMW, not Ford scrap. Ready-made wheels come up for sale on this forum fairly regularly, so put a Wanted ad up.

Proper cars have 6 cylinder engines, lesser cars make do with only 4 cylinders, this does affect balance and idle quality....

they used the standard 325i transmission whether it be sport manual, normal manual or switchable auto

My C2 will be using a 6.5 kgs flywheel, you can take more off if you wanted. I won't as I had the whole bottom end balanced.
