Just thought I would need the chassis number to be able to get parts,is this a worth while upgrade or would the 2.8 route be best?

2.8 would be cheaper to build.

Ye my reservation with the 2.8 would be durability.would it give as high mileage as a 2.7.....
Is it a 50-100k engine! Just checked bbs325 seems he's behind bars

You will be asked for the Alpina engine number, I don't know if its a new thing but i just ordered new badges for my C2, at first they asked for the Alpina chassis number, i pointed out E30s didn't get one, they then asked for the 4 digit engine number, i might add that these questions came from BMW not the dealer, they put my order on stop until they had what they wanted.

To be honest, cost to build a brand new C2 2.7 from scratch would be pretty mad.
Think, New TD Cank & New Pistons would probably cost what it would to build a complete 2.8.

a 2,8 done to a good standard is a good motor once mine comes on cam it really is punchy.
