just read a thread on here about a M3 rep that has a 24v engine conversion and it got me thinking would an E30 with 2.5 24v conversion be faster than a standard E30 M3

Maybe not a total spanking if the mfree is a 2.5 but torque counts on the road (imo)
E30 Touring 0.35 cD - more slippery than prison soap

I expect an m52 e30 would be quicker, but not massively so. power output isnt that different. The problem is, if you're going to do an engine swap you usually end up modifying it while you're at it.
different manifold, no cat, m50 manifold etc.

Guys excuse my lack of knowledge, a old family man working hard t0 keep the lights on and engine running.
This seems a interesting topic after little reading up on the zone i find:
M52 - 2.8L - 6 Cylinder
vs
S14 - 2.2L - 4 Cylinder
Both in engines of course in a E30 Shell of some sort. I can imagine for track use quick turns, tight bends and short straights the S14 will handle some what better the the converted M52 although the M52 can be again altered for optimum handling and acceleration.
Keeping the topic on just clearly a S14 M3 vs a M52 2.8 E30, my thoughts express that the Legendary M3 will loose in a straight line however may edge of have a chance in and around a circuit due to its lighter engine up front (providing every gear is living in the red) however the M52 I presume will have just as much a chance closing the gap in the straights, this seems a close call however id put my money on the m52.
Its sad to know that the M52 will more than likely beat the legendary S14 however we must not forget the technology and engineering time difference is by far miles apart from each other.
I really would not like to be slaughtered if id be driving a e30 m3 by a m52 powered e30.
Interesting in deed.
The M3 was strictly designed to go round a track and built to race however it really struggles to stand a chance to more modern sport coupes.

The S14 is as much an anchor as the M30, going off size differences, I wouldnt be surprised if the M52 was the same weight, its not a lot heavier at all to lift by hand

Nope, s14 isn't a light engine by any means, but it is shorter, which does make a difference to how it feels.
I might own an m3, but that doesnt make me a blinkered m3 fanboy.
just looking at the figures of completely standard engines,
m52b28,
190bhp at 5300rpm, 207 ft.lb at 3900 rpm
s14b23,
197bhp at 6750rpm, 177ft.lb at 4750 rpm
So, although the s14 loses out on peak torque, it has a slight power advantage, and hangs onto the torque it has for a lot longer, which means you can keep it in a lower gear for longer and take advantage of their torque multiplication.
Of course, chuck an m50 manifold and a remap on the m52, and you increase power above and beyond the standard (500cc smaller) s14, and increase the m52s power band and ability to rev, which will swing the advantage quite heavily its way.
The s14 isn't a 2.3 because bmw thought that was the best size engine for the car, it's because they had to build an engine to that size to fit in with the regulations for the series' they intended the car to compete in, and it has to be said, they did a pretty good job

So in a nut shell its gonna take a proper sorted M5# conversion to walk all over the M3

to walk over, yes, i'd have thought so. but like a lot of these things, it would probably come down to which driver is prepared to dish out more abuse!

I've driven a couple of M50 converted cars and an M52 converted car. Admitted none of them was a tidy conversion. I don't think any of them would walk all over an M3, but then depends whether its a 200k mileage M3 against a low mileage M52.
Things like this can't really be compared IMO

Having driven both back to back one being a tidy M3 the other being an M52B28 running 320i suspension, the M3 was far more focused, but the grunt of the B28 was very noticable coming out of bends etc. Now having driven a reasonably sorted M52B28 conversion it would be an interesting challenge around a track

I honestly thought a m52 would destroy an m3, after watching a clip on youtube when an e30 m3 just about beat an e90 320d. The 0-60 in a 320d is in the 8 second area and an m52 in a e30 should be in the 6's i'd imagine.
Im sure the e30 m3 will be a better and more nimble on the track but on a quarter mile strip??

A standard 195bhp, early cat m3 does 0-60 in 6.9 seconds.
Again, why would you expect an m5x e30 to destroy an m3 with similar weight and similar power?

When all is said and done, at the end of the 'race' the M3 driver has a M3, the M52'd turd pilot has a cobbled up carbuncle that is valued by the KG + the price of a few morsels

This all seems a close call.
Top end speeds M52 over the S14
Low end quick accelleration mid range grunt S14
Legendry M3 - Must be loved for its drive and handling especally in this day and age however can imagine speed would have been much more appreciated back in its prime days but not now.
E46 - 320/325 has chances over the ole Girl sad but true i presume.

I actually think its the other way around.
The M52 car will have the initial good start, but as speed builds up and the S14 sewing machine comes on cam coupled to the perfectly matched gear ratios it will catch up and have the top end acceleration and ultimate top speed.
A good S14 be it 2.3 or 2.5 will always have the better in gear acceleration over an M52.
Piloting an M3 is like driving a modern remapped Diesel, put your foot down, wait wait wait wait
booooooost

The whole package is not really designed for ultimate standing starts, or city traffic driving. Its not a fast car from stock, clearly having only 4 cylinders and low CC numbers doesn't help.
But as an over all engine, its fantastic capable of serious power, sadly its not with in reach of many owners and its low BHP for $$$ puts people off.
Personally I would not be wasting my time with an M52, just stick an SR20 in there and enjoy the handling and power (doesn't look as nice though).

My opinion is anything with less than 6 cylinders is pointless, and I don't care how much it cost or is worth

The reason why you would buy an e30 m3 nowadays is not because of how fast it is (so many modern day cars are faster) but how it delivers that power, redline through pretty much every gear, the grunt you get from the chain driving S14 is not like any of those home conversions.
Even on most tracks you will never get in to 5th gear + the handling of this well balanced piece of machinery is still top of the list.
If it did not come out of the factory with that M3 badge on the back it will always be second best IMO.
