Went to see a set of alpina reps listed as £170 on gumtree.
Went to the address given by the seller and family could not speak english.. called the guy back he said he would be five minutes, I parked up the road in my 330d.
This thugged out looking guy pulled up in a battered red e30. With a spliff/joint in mouth.. calling me saying to follow him to another location to do the deal... telling me the address is not his as he just gives that address so he could meet me there...
Did not feel like getting robbed so left!! some shady bloody people on gumtree...
Guess the wheels were too good to be true!!... at £170 with good tyres...
As my e30 is immobile on a set of alloys with damaged tyres and wanted a set of wheels (ideally bbs reps ie Lenso BSX or Dare RS) these wheels would have done temporarily BUT did not feel like getting jammed up for bk reps's.
Even if bought judging by the guy and his car they would have been buckled or similar...
shady gumtree..... for alpina reps...

sounds ike you got yourself at it tbh, selling wheels on gumtree/ebay via cash on collection- you never give home address to strangers and meet 2 mins down the road, to safeguard them maybe robbing you, if someones going to set up a gum tree sting and rob you, im sure theyd do it for a bit more than 170, most traders/parts dealers bomb around in shit heaps

You did the right thing.
I've had my fair share of w@nkers, where the items described don't match. And then they have the audacity to say 'what did you expect for that sort of money' & 'what do you expect for a **year old item'.
Saying that my friend and I went to see a Z4 coupe a few days back, we went to see it instead of going to the gym. So we've turned up to view this car in some knackered trainers, old jogging bottoms and a baggy tshirt (didn't really fit the part of people that would spend over 10k on a car). Anyways cut a long story short, the car was lovely and my friend fell in love with it. The owner didn't feel comfortable letting my friend test drive the car, so the owner drove it with my friend in the passenger seat. We used it to our advantage and haggled the already reduced price down an extra £450.
Moral of the story dont judge a book by its cover, but on the other hand don't ignore your gut feeling
. Both cancel each other out but gut feeling is always best

Large kerbing scuff/chunks gauged to alloy.. could see that from where i was...
Polsta.. you seem to chat a lot of negtative rubbish some times... as end of the day i have bought and sold for many years and people will use many tricks, money is money...
especially now that I have seen the same gumtree wheels for same price, using same pictures, but different name and tel number in different part of london..
Also fact the guy called me from two different tel numbers......
That enough info to sound shady for you Polsta?????

i only commented on your original post, which you didnt mention you saw the wheels, and saying you left when he said follow you to another location, probably just a couple of hillbillys with a set of shite wheels trying to fob them off on someone, which is what you get for looking on gumtree for such in the 1st place, but like kangman says dont judge a book by its cover, and most of the time to get the best deals form things like that, are always sold by pikey sorts

Sounds like he did not want to give you his home address so he got no come back, wheels probably nicked but at 170 with tyres you should have followed, might have liked a good bumming!

It's easy to make a judgment of a situation from behind a PC screen, especially after the fact.
If something doesn't feel right, its usually for good reason.
Imagine what the replies would be if the OP had said "so I followed him to his suggested location. I now have 2 black eyes, a broken nose and I'm £170 lighter with no wheels to show for it".

I gotta say I think you over reacted a bit... Surely you should have had a look and if they were untidy just use that for leverage in haggling.
