hi ya'al
right i want to do an m50 engine conversion on my bmw compact

but i've been told that because my car is 1999 (v reg) that is obd2 and a m50 engine is obd1so it's not possible ( i think it's some thing to do with wiring not sure).
My problem is I've seen it done

can anyone give in any help/input if this is true

thanks in advance

It is possible, however it's not worth it. I am sure he is referring to EWS rather than OBD as obd will make no odds.
As you have EWSII you can go for an m52b28 of the same age and just swap all of the EWSII components over from the donor car, an m50 conversion would mean converting back to an older version of the imobliser and actually a 2.8 m52 is a better choice.

The EWS is easily dealt with if its a later vanos engine, apart from that its just a case of bridging 2 wires

like said above your car will probably be ews3 .
better off with m52b28!

and you will have ews issues if you dont know what your doing to cut and shut them , its not as simple as putting an m52 with ews into an e30 .

I do know someone that can offer his services to correct this for you depending on your location .

iirc it will be an easier swap with an early M50 as EWS wont be involved, ie nothing to stop the engine running.
If EWS is an issue could it be run on E36 323i management? in theory there both 2.5 litre vanos engines.

That will be a non EWS engine already, you wont need to touch the ECU, just get the starter working and your away :D
