Going to be fitting an E46 067 rack soon. The current rack is leaking from the N/S boot. Just wondering if anyone knows whats the actual cause of this with E30 racks. Where they simply not a well built item or is it an indication of a fault elsewhere in the system.

Would be a shame if the new rack goes the same way due to me missing something..

From X-works build thread was wondering if it was worth pulling the pump apart, giving it a good clean and servicing it with news parts..

Cheers

I would think the current rack is leaking after being used for 20+ years.
Rebuilding the pump might not be a bad idea if your pump is grumbling/whining, but if its working fine now....

my thoughts are that the rack lifetime is dependent on regular ATF PAS fluid changes... once the fluid turns grey.... leaks seem to be inevitable

I had a problem with my pump recently. It seems that the pressure relief valve was sticking open and not pressuring the rack when turning. I drained the fluid (which was quite clean) then took the pump off and sprayed it full of light oil, shook it about, drained it, then put more light oil in and left it overnight. Next day I flushed it with new atf and reinstalled it and put new fluid in the system. All problems solved with no new parts purchased!
These are sensations as hard to forget as they are to ignore.....

Thanks all for your comments. I think I'll leave it then. Just give it a good soak and flush..
