Hey guys, I'm floating about a few ideas for how to fuel my 318is conversion and so was hoping for some info/advice.

i'm in the middle of an engine conversion to bring my 318is out to 2.1l and high compression ratio, head work and mb throttle bodies (this may be done at a later stage), and i need to get the fuel injection system up to spec. the e30 318is has no lambda, no knock sensors, afm etc so i'm looking it uprating it a bit. i want to uprate the injection using as much factory stuff as possible. if i must i'll go piggyback etc, but only if i must.

the first thing i'm looking at is putting the car up to e36 318is fuel injection. both the e30 and the e36 318is are motronic 1.7, both have same sensors and connector on the dme. only difference in e36 has knock sensors, lambda and dual intake. i'm looking into if i can add knock sensors and lambda to mine by wiring in the sensors and changing ecu, reckoning that knock detection is a good thing seeing as i'm making so many changes, and that lambda won't do any harm either. so the first thing i wanted to do was check where all the pins on the dme go and make sure they're all in the same place, second thing i wanted to do was find out what the spare plugs under the battery and on the intake boot of the 318is do, as i have my suspicions. i've got an e36 bentley which gives me all the dme pins on the e36 318is and where they go, and have just got hold of an ETM for the e30 318is, but the etm has only got some of the dme connections on it, not all. these are the same as the e36 though which is good news.

the other thing i'm considering is going to m44 injection. That has motronic 5.2 with MAF, OBD 2 etc. and i think may be much better for the my conversion. i've driven one of these a bit and the fuel system seems really sorted. unfortunately i know nothing about these, so probably need setting straight on a load of stuff...
as far as converting mine, this is what i reckon broadly i'd need to do:
1) get hold of m44 coil (different connector), crank and cam position sensors (different connector), MAF, lambda probe, knock sensors, wiring loom, dme, ews receive and transmit modules and lock barrel. all from same car.
i'm presuming i can keep everything else from my car. i know that the tps
is the same, not sure if the injectors are correct. am i missing anything? I'm not sure how the ecu will feel about not having the DISA connected, i'm guessing it will deal with it.
2) fit above, meaning change engine loom and change e36 connector from m44 loom to e30 loom by finding out pin arrangement.

how difficult is this going to be? And more importantly for me, what will the capabilities of the system be? I'm hoping it will give me better monitoring of sensors when hooked up to the proper computer, better performance due to MAF and live mapping? Am i right? how easy is the system to tune - is it better than the motronic 1.7 system - i'm working on it being better to tune so better for my project.

In short, what is the best way for me to fuel this project of mine, assuming i'm not keen on aftermarket products.

Cheers

Sorry, most of that is well above my current level of knowledge, although I have a M54 in the workshop to go in an E30 at some time, so I will have a lot of similar problems to sort.
The only questions I can answer are the connector under the battery tray is for a lambda sensor (should be a spare relay socket near the DME and fuelrelays as well), and the spare connector near the inlet boot is for the control valve for the charcoal cannister for fuel tank vapours, if I remember correctly.

ah cheers for that, yeah i thought the connector under the battery was for the lambda probe but andrew said it was the one under the intake boot which had me confused! thanks for the heads up on the relay too.
think you're spot on about the cannister too, will check my bro's e36 and find out for certain.
i wonder how i'll rig up knock sensors then.... was hoping (but doubtful) that the connector was for the knock sensors, but i'm 99% certain now that you've meantioned the cannister that they're not.
Cheers for your help!
don't suppose you have a diagram/table of the complete pin layout for the e30 318is m42 dme do you?

It is a truly wise man who has a wealth of knowledge yet still has the bravery and honesty to say:
"Sorry, most of that is well above my current level of knowledge"

I think this is why 'Brain'Mooore knows so much- he dares to continue to learn.

Been quite philosophical there....
