rusty 87 sport-worth saving?
Moderator: martauto
bought an mtech 1 without seeing it because it was cheap. its in a pretty bad state and may be beyond economical restoration. worst part is holes in the roof. one interesting thing is what looks like genuine half leather in anthrazite houndtooth with rear headrests. Are these rare in this combination? tech 2 boot spoiler instead of mtech 1 but rest of the body kit is there and in pretty good shape.
what money is mtech 1 stuff bringing now? i will add some pictures tomorrow and get some opinions on to repair or break

Depends how big your pockets and sills and desire are ? New roof is a biggie , but I don't think there is such thing as a genuine half leather houndstooth i think i read on here, prob had a re trim due to worn bolsters

Depends on how much it'll cost you to fix. With the replacement roof it'll be worse less than 'standard'.
These beasts are getting rarer by the day. I got my hands on a half share of one recently and it's really growing on me.

I doubt there is such a thing as a genuine half leather houndstooth intetior,(more than likely repaired with leather bolsters, and therefore less desirable than in their original state). Most restorations do not make economical sense,if your looking to sell it on at a profit. CHEAP = usually £DEAR if you intend on doing things properly and especially if your talking old E30,s. There are a few Tech 1 restorations on the zone at the moment, if you intend on keeping it long term, it maybe worth doing it!
looking more likely to break than to restore, we will tear it apart to see the extent of the problems but the roof is a biggy, my mate just got a 91 325i se 2 door so he will take the obvious things like diff and headcloth, but if it breaks i will pm you

Half leather houndstooth is not genuine.bmw9818 wrote:That interior is most likely genuine, I had a similar set but only front seats, sold them for about £200 odd with the full set be worth a bit more,
Try your luck with them I suppose

if you got the money to save it, do it, they will be worth big money in the future. Tech 1s are thin on the ground... good luck

its easy for this to be said but if you have it in front of you and it needs a new roof skin and possibly a lot more would you be willing to chuck your cash at it?Fastroad wrote:Keep it, save it, rebuild it, make it what you want. Tech1 value is rising too
this could be 10k upwards to do it right is it really worth it?

There's no shame in fragging it and sending it to china. Better that than the whole thing gets crushed.
For what you've paid there's a tidy profit in frag, you can't lose. Make this a business decision and use the profit to go towards a decent tech1 sport. Although, I haven't seen many for sale lately.....

any you mean !!! thats the thing, you just dont see nice ones for sale, cant even remember the last one for sale bar the wln one that was of a nice order, if you really want a tech 1 you just have to bite the bullet and get the job done, although a roof skin is a big thing, but it depends on other issues, if the inner arches, boot, floor, bulkhead etc were nice it would be worth a new roof maybe, or if you could do it yourself, unless it was a "known/proven" example- imagine having a 5-7k priced tech 1 that looked good, and the gamble of buying it without seeing the floor and behind the dash etc, hell of a gamble ??? better off buying a 2k one and spending 5 bags on it and sorting everything yourself properlyTopblag wrote:

if you picked up that 1 cheap and really wanted a tech 1,and its frag it or fix it- then get to work strippng it and then evaluate what actualy needs doing and what extent, then decide, and if its too far gone, then personly id keep all the parts, find another one, and sort that, then keep all the bits as long term spares, or sell whats left over once its done, no point fragging it then selling it then buying another
i already use a tech 1 as my daily driver,so i can use bits for that and a mate bought a 91 325i se which we are currently stripping for body repairs. he already wants the sport parts for that.we are going to strip it to see full extent but im not too hopeful of what we will find.
some pictures below of my dd and a couple of the rust on the other one, engine caught fire when we were loading it onto the flatbed, lol

I decided to sort out my tech 2 because I had already sunk ,oney into it before realising the depth of the issues.
You're in a good position where you've got it cheap, haven't spent any further money on it, and you know at this point that it's a turd.
The clever answer to this is break it and make a few bucks, instead of ploughing money into what looks like it will be a bottomless money pit.
