Sounds a plan , I bought an 18 inch set of stilsons last time just for the job

But still couldn't do it so took it to a garage where there is a friendly chap who does little bits for cash for me, he used to work as a bmw mechanic at the main dealers in Johannesburg back in the late eighties era.

He also has a hydraulic spring compressor, we changed both springs in less than 10 mins last time, I slipped him a tenner and everyone was happy. He also has a decent press and can change rear beam bushes in about 20 mins flat.

Get the strut in a vice, or use your action man vice-like-grip (like I do) and tap the back of the stillies with a hammer whilst they are locked onto the collar to get it going. You gotta shock the collar undone at first then wind the rest off.

Hmm GSF have got Boge shocks in, their listings are all over the place though, you'd have to call 'em.

GSF on eBay has them, thats what I mean about their stock listings. You need to give 'em a call and see what they have. Here they are but they are listed as compatible for 4 and 6 pot engines... ?

Ok so I bleed the clutch properly and the gearshift is just not right at all

In my m20 with the clutch pressed I can select all gears fine

In the m30 with the clutch pressed I can not get 3rd or 4th at all. I'm not happy with this as this was the problem with the box originally so i took it into a specialist and had it fixed for the sum of £120 notes.

Actually even 1st, 2nd and 5th is a bit notchy.

I have the 325i sletor arm with all new bushes and a z3 shifter.

Do you think I'm looking at a gearbox change? Feeling like it to me.

Luckily I have a spare getrag 260 which I know is a good box

What a pain

That gearbox is a duff, if you can get 1st, 2nd and 5th then it can be nothing else but a problem inside the box :(

Id pull the engine back out to change it too, Trust me!

No need to pull the engine if Jim left the 2 top Gbox bolts off.

Undo the engine moun,ts lose, don't remove the nuts, undo the g/box mounts, prop, and tilt the lot down.
I've taken my g/box off twice in the cab this way this way.

Just read your thread again Lee must have been about 3 times now.

I was thinking if doing it that way Rav to be honest I might give it a go but am tempted to take the lot out as I wanted to tidy up the bulkhead where I scratched it a bit last time I put the lump in.

It should be quicker now I know what goes where.

Great fun hey !!

It does have a little running issue. If I close the throttle when running the revs blip up a little after the throttle has closed. The throttle plate definitely closes perfect first time but then there is a little blip of revs after it has shut. Could this be the ecu needs to learn a new map? Or could it be the ICV as it opens, it's opening a little too much. The TPS is set perfectly.

Take the ICV off and clean it out either by using petrol, or carb cleaner, then see.
Mine did that, but it statred to hunt, cleaned the ICV, all was OK

ok mate, i kinda did that when i was doing the re-build but could have got some grot blocking it so will give it a good clean. I just picked up a new tin of carb cleaner at the weekend for £2 :)

I thought it could be the AFM door not closing properly ??

Could be a slight airleak, or your ICV being a bit crap.? You got a spare ICV to test?

or your ICV being a bit crap
I think it might be that mate

I have a couple of M20 ICVs, a realOEM search reveals they are the same. I have a couple of good known working ones (like the one on my daily) so i'll swap em over tonight and give it a go.

I've booked next week off work to do my gearbox change.

What pain in the arse. Engine out jobbie or you going to tilt the engine in situ and take the box off?

I might take the whole lot out. I want to touch up the bulkhead where i scratched it putting the lump in and a few other bits whilst the lump is out. With the load leveler the actuall lifting in and out doesn't take long i found. It took me a while to jiggle the engine back onto the rear most mounting holes though. I'll definately try to re-cycle the coolant, it would be a shame to waste that.

I think i will try it in-situ first though. I'll take off the rubber engine mounts, drop the lump down and angle the front right up so i can get at the bell housing bolts easier. Got to be worth a try, Rav has done it a few times so i'll give it a go :)

Seems such a shame to take everything off i've just spent 4 weeks putting back on, am really gutted!! Had a right grump on at work all day !!

Too late mate, it's booked in for Wednesday . It's just that there is a classic car show by our house on the 16th and I wanted more than anything to take the car. So if all goes to plan I will have her back Thursday with a working box and then it's hopefully finishing off stuff and the MOT. I have all my fingers crossed everything is going to be ok.
