I have the BBS 15 inch wheels on my 325i, and the rear tyres have pretty much had it. Currently have 205/55/15 tyres on the rear. BIL has a spare set of tyres, 225/50/15. Wondering whether these would go on, and be a good idea if they do fit.

In theory a 225 50 has a sidewall 0.25mm smaller, and will give a speedo error of 0.08%
In reality, that's not enough to even consider worrying about, and less difference than you'll get with a half worn set of original size ones.
However, you'll have to decide whether you have 10mm clearance either side of your current tyres. I think rears should be ok, but fronts might be close to the strut.
I would also check the tyre specs, most cars with 225 tyres will have a minimum of 7.5in wide wheels.

^^^ and I think the reason why most go 205/50 which is very common.

I've got a pair of Toyo Proxes TR-1's (225/50/15) to go on the back of mine ... also on 15" BBS.
Have been told there should be no problems on the rear ... wouldn't attempt it on the front.

225's on a 7J rim (i.e 15" BBS) would look a bit silly...
205 is the perfect width for that size, probably 215 being the max.
