i was given a s3.64 diff and was wondering if it is possible to swap the ratio to 3.91 or 4.10, would it be possible to get a second open diff the same case size, and swap the lsd unit in to the new case, and what exactly would be required?

Yes. The crown wheel and pinion are what determine the diff ratio, and both are swappable. How this feat is achieved I'm not sure of the finer details. .

so can any one else comment on how easy it would be to swap the ratio of a lsd, could i get the new diff remove the open diff bolt the crown wheel to the lsd unit and re fit, all providing i didnt play with the pinion i would assume that i would need to re set the backlash?, also if i re used the same shims from the same sides and same side bearing plate bits from the lsd unit would i be fairly close on bearing pre-load and tooth contact in theory?
