Both!

It is definitely a track car, but I'm still a rep for my old club SkylineOwners.com even though I don't have a Skyline anymore. We have days out etc.. I'm organising a run out to Buttertubs pass in the Yorkshire Dales at the end of June for example.

Being able to take a nice weapon like the E30 is a bonus. Wouldn't be the same if I had to go in the pickup or on the bike

I dropped the prop shaft in for modification this morning and that's going to be 7-10 days minimum.

So in the meantime I'm diverting attention to the aesthetics.

I've been out and bought a set of wheels off a mate today. I've also picked up some rear light clusters that I think look way better than the stock ones.

What do you reckon about the boot lid badge? Go for sleeper and stick a 318i badge on it, show off and stick a 335i badge or go debadged and keep em guessing??

Debadged means paint since whoever took the old badge off the boot has worn the paint down and it looks crap. But that's probably the way to go as it needs a bit of a touch up in a few places.

These are the shoes I've got for it:

And these are the rear light clusters:

I had a 316 badge on the back and it had the wrong effect. People believe a badge and you end up with every one and there mums wanting a race. It's funny at first but wears off quick. 335 is the way forward.

Quick update

yesterday was a bad day :( !

The fan i fitted decided to work for a few minutes, then seized up solid, so most of the afternoon and evening involved sourcing a replacement, and grafting it to fit into the mods id made previously!

so the motor now has a larger fan (that works!)

Image
Image

I then refitted the front of the car, again, inc bumper (modded slightly to clear the fan) and front spoiler/airdam affair! you can just see where i trimmed the bumper beneath the grill, assume thats OK joel?!

Image

The interior now has the shift knob in place, gaitor, and i have rejigged the power windows so the switch that was the lockout is now the fan switch (stealthtastic!)

Image

I also bled the water system, which was traumatic as the thermostat was stuck shut, and the bleed screw was blocked, so i bled the system through the housing and blanking plug, worked just fine in the end

tried some alternative wheels i thought joel may like from my spares!! ;)

Bummer about the fan. :( Do you not have a thermostatically controlled operation, or just the manual switch?

Tasty set of wheels and racing slicks - what were they used on?

I'd highly recommend fitting a fan stat ASAP, they are only about 12 quid, you'd be surprised how easy it is forgetting to put your fan on.! The m30 donk will overheat in minutes.

Cosmetic update. Doug let my loose with his trolley jack. It went about as well as could be expected.

I don't think many purists are fans of those rear lights but I love them. They look clean and simple like the E28 rears, the standard E30 ones are too busy for me. No nonsense, that's what we like here! :)

I'm hoping and praying (spectacle testicles wallet and watch) that the bloody prop is gonna be finished tomorrow. The company doing it are not the most forward thinking people. Each time I phone, I'm on hold for 10 mins to be told "no, not done yet, phone back Friday". 2 weeks and counting :(

Seriously, they're taking the Michael. I was quoted 7-10 days when I dropped it off. 2 weeks later and f**k all! They now reckon it's definitely gonna be ready by mid-week. The joy of being at the mercy of a niche business. I can't take it elsewhere and they don't give a sh*t.

I had a similar problem once, when I dropped off some hubs to a local engineering firm, who are normally pretty reliable. It probably would have only taken them a matter of an hour or so to do the work, with all their lathes and drilling equipment, etc.

I waited weeks, and had one excuse after another, then the guy who was going to be doing the job was off ill, so in the end, I collected the parts and did the work myself!

Today i have been mostly fitting an e30 temp sender, modifying the fan switch (oopsie!) and fixing the indicators!

Still waiting for the prop :(

What was up with the fan switch, do tell? :p

I'll probably pop over tomorrow night with a couple of bits. Got the silicone elbow for the air intake and should have the speedo coding plug tomorrow too.

haha! Just had my first drive of her - goes like a banshee :D

Just managed to chuck a wet sponge over her before it started tipping it down:

Image

Couple of bits that still need tweaking, it's a bugger to keep that monster under the bonnet cool, so me and Doug are chucking a couple of ideas around. It's fine for now but doesn't like being stood in traffic very long.

Most of the rest of the work is tidying her up cosmetically, there's a few scrapes and scratches, still undecided what badge if any to stick on the boot (335i or 318is or something different), and the interior needs a right sort out, will probably just strip it to save weight.

Not gonna think about the NOS until we can keep her cooler I reckon.

I've got it to play with today and tomorrow, then it's going in the garage to get MOT'd, whatever is involved in making it legal. Then by next weekend we can go out and cause some carnage :D

Looks great - one mean chariot. 8)

Sounds like you need a decent electric fan (or two) on there...

Already got 2!

I've seen a drift car setup with the rad in a sealed box in the back of the car being fed air by big hoses from the rear windows, might go down that sort of route, cos this things a track weapon and it needs to be cool!

Errr ..... front valence fell off on the trip home! Went over a speed bump and it fell under the car and got dragged a few feet, so that now needs a shedload of paint lol.

Having said that the temp seemed a lot more manageable in my afternoon hooning once that had come off.

Will look into bonnet lifters, it's a common drift mod I know but not sure if it spoils the lines of the car. Never used to be that anal about aesthetics but I love this E30 so much I want it to look as well as it goes!

I had problems keeping mine cool. I've got a new e28 535i radiator, with a 16" Kenlowe fan on, and also took the rubber seal out on the slam panel which lets heat out too. Not had any overheating issues since. I didn't want to lift my bonnet either, mine still looks like a 320i from the outside, still got the badge on the back too :)

Have you thought about wrapping the manifolds to keep underbonnet temps down? I'm going to be wrapping my 6 branch manifolds in the next couple of weeks for this reason.
