Verde's got some sound advise here.verde wrote:The thing here is you have the chance to do what I should have done. hang around, gain knowledge, figure out what you want and then buy it when you have cash!
I bought my first E30 not really knowing much. Joined up on here but didn't really come on here tat regular. Got wrapped up in starting my career and just drove my IS pushing back any plans for it for 3 years.
In the last year and a half I've been on here pretty much every day. Realised my current E30 at the time was a shi!!er and went looking for a cleaner example before ploughing any money into a project. Just as well in a way too, as I couldn't have afforded it back then.
My point is that this site is excellent I've learnt so much in the last year and half, from brousing threads asking questions and reading the wiki pages.
So sit back soak it (the Zone) in get a job then get an E30 in good time..
It's amazing the difference a good polish and some BBS shoes can do...

And yeah thank you all
You are right, now is not the time, and I still have a-lot to learn. (Almost everything in-fact) just because I have a Haynes manual and a garage full of tools doesn't mean I know what i'm doing.
I don't want to think about how much more difficult the E30 search will be in 2 - 3 years, nor do I want to think how much more expensive it will be to find a decent example.
But in 2 - 3 years, if things stay on track, £2500 will seem like less than £375 does to me now.

Buy a Micra/Clio/106 to get you on the road. Then you can save for an E30 at your leisure. You also get to build up driving experience in a banger you don't care about, instead of making expensive mistakes in your E30. In a year or two, spend a few grand on a clean, low model E30 and give it weekend use for a while until you're ready to buy your M3...

Thats exactly it Tom, learning every day. Theres tricks youl pick up and things you learn that are impossible to find out from text, you need to do it hands on. Like that the alpina guide on removing the speedo gives 2 of the steps in the wrong order and if you dont realise you break 2 of the fucking pins holding it to the surround

Gotta be a Lupo. I want me some German comfort. I'm honestly not sure if I want an M3... I think a 325i would do the trick.

Of course I dont know how i'll feel about that when it comes round to it.
Just got quoted £0.00 for insurance on a 318iS though (just playing around)
If only it weren't cos the site is broken

There's not much I wouldn't do for a mint matte black E30 2dr with an M60B40 V8, lowered on some nice gun-metal grey BBS rims...verde wrote:^^^ I hated m3s til last year. Then i was like ****!!!!! GET ME AN M3 NOW!
Listen to that attitude!

Of course if I had that, I would need to get my BMW straight 6 fix from something else. (I think an E28 525/30/35i would do the trick)

..when I passed, it worked out cheaper to buy a £500 E30 and pay £800 for insurance rather than paying £1200 for an economical 1.0 sh*tbox and getting slightly cheaper insurance, (say £600...) This was the £500 318i Auto turd in question:snakebrain wrote:Buy a Micra/Clio/106 to get you on the road. Then you can save for an E30 at your leisure. Not sure if the maths have swung the other way now

At the moment its something like this...
£1000 for a Lupo 1.4 and £2300 for my first year of insurance
£750 for a 316 and £4400 for my first year of insurance.
A 318i..? £4518
All these are TPF&T with a named driver who has over 25 years of experience and hasn't claimed in over a decade.
It has most certainly 'swung the other way'
Also I would hardly call that car a turd. If it had manual transmission and some bottlecaps it would be a nice little E30.
If you are curious as to what I get quoted for other things, feel free to ask. I have everything set up so that all I have to do is change the car make, model and year and click 'get quote'
Also things go down DRASTICALLY after 10 months with no claims (accelerator policy) again, feel free to ask.

I'm an old git (only took my test in my mid-30s). In the long term you'll be better off, with more exotic options open at a younger age... I think I went for fully comp with a huge excess.. I'm sure you already have, but try switching around every single option... Parked on the street was cheaper than garaged with my compact for some reason

Get the e30.
Don't let the nay sayers put you off.
If its something you can put the time into its a hell of a lot more rewarding than a clio.
Better in the garage than the pub after all.
Ring around for insurance. Insurance in NI is more expensive but friend got a quote of £1500 for his first year on the road in a mk2 GTD golf with Adrian Flux insurance.
ALSO!
Do an advanced driving course. Knocked £500 quid off my insurance

Wow, a sudden influx of replies haha.
I have tried switching options around, I'll do so a bit more now though as one of you pointed out that it doesnt always translate to the quote how you would expect.
I already have a named driver on my policy.
And i'm fine for magic beans, thankyou adamski80.
I would get the E30, but i'm sure you'll appreciate that £2000+ is a massive difference between quotes.
Also the no-claims effect:
The insurance on the 1.4 Lupo is £1061 with 1 years no claims.
The insurance on an E30 316 is £2000 with 1 years no claims.
The insurance on an E30 325i is £3231 with 1 years no claims.
The prices drop substantially again if I set my age to 1 year older.

I would just like to point out that you're the only person with that opinion of what I said, and I made it very clear that I wasn't expecting a PM.
I would also like to add that I did in-fact receive a PM.
I have removed my original content from the OP now just in case someone else feels the need to express their differing opinion in a non-constructive way.

Insurance is a lottery, my insurance for the E21 is stupidly cheap, cheaper than polos etc. Its a fucking lottery

Sorry but am I Losing the plot.... Or did you not just ask someone to buy you a car..... Then store said vehicle for you??acme15 wrote:Im not entirely sure you know what that means...adamski80 wrote:Ok fine il let every one carry on blowing smoke up your ass!

I question this as being totally unbelievable! Not many people posted what I think most would agree as being ridiculous. Just slapping you on the back as I said blowing smoke up your ass.
I must be wrong or smoking something I shouldn't
I asked if someone in the area would take a look at it and see if it was as good as the advert made out. I then went on to say that ONLY if it were, could they purchase it and store it until I were able to collect it and store it myself.adamski80 wrote:Sorry but am I Losing the plot.... I made it very clear that I was not expecting a response, and I also made it very clear that it was just an "if you don't ask you don't get so you may as well try" situation.
As it happens, the car was not in as good-a-nick as I thought it was, so it didn't have to go any further. But if it had, I would have amended my request to include a clause stating that if I were unable to collect it in X amount of time, that the car would fall to whoever purchased it.
You are arguing that it was an unrealistic request, but you are missing the point. I KNOW it was an un-realistic request, but what I don't know is whether or not there is someone who has a spare £375 and space to store a car, who would be willing to purchase and store said car. One of the first people to reply said that if they were closer they would consider helping, they may have been empty words, I don't know, but they were said nonetheless.
I also said that I would pay extra for the storage of the car. There were a lot of variables involved which would have been discussed if anyone had been willing to take it further.
The topic has moved on now. But feel free to continue trashing my thread.

I have to commend acme for having the balls to ask. Like he said if you don't ask you don't get.adamski80 wrote:Sorry but am I Losing the plot.... My ten pence worth is that at the end of the day, a sub £500 e30 is 99.9% of the time going to turn into a money pit. Acme I would have thought you would be better saving up while you are at college etc, and buying yourself a motor that is really worth having. Keep on the site and absorb the "knowledge" of the Coonts on here. In the mean time, get yourself a moped or a £200 banger. That way if you prang it or it expires, you can just send it to the bridge. The lupo will be expensive to buy and if it blows up you will feel obligated to fix it.
Adamski stop trolling him mate. He is just trying to get into the wonderful world of the e30. Even if it may seem a bit outlandish. You never know how kind people can be until you try, this site has lost a lot of new guys because of attitudes like yours.
My advice should you care even a little bit is wait for the e30 you might as well do 20 months of 10 month bonus accelerator policy`s then get a proper one with your 2 years no claims(325 or 318is [lets not have that argument]) over a 316 4 door turd that will only supply you with utter disappointment at every opportunity tbh the little lupo would probably out do the 316 in every aspect from speed to mpg and handling in-between .But even a lupo you are going to have to pay vw scene tax the seat arosa is the same car and probably cheaper on insurance as well as buying ,also as others have said add a few old people to your insurance that will bring it down dont get a black box as they are the start of the downfall of society.
Also i wouldn't worry about prices of e30 going up too much in 4 years time i bet you can still get a reasonable e30 for a grand cheap ones are always around i bought my tech 1 sport a few months back for £750 (i think might have been 800).

I give up not trolling or whatever. good luck son hope you find some stranger on a public forum willing to buy you a car and store it. Until maccy d's upgrade you from toilet duties to burger flipping. Owch kill the witch. Just can't get my head round it all. My bad.
I give up not trolling or whatever? At least acme can put a cogent, well punctuated sentence together. I wouldn't write like that in your cv mate, you won't get a look in at maccy d's, even for the toilet cleaning vacancies.adamski80 wrote:I give up not trolling or whatever. good luck son hope you find some stranger on a public forum willing to buy you a car and store it. You are absolutely entitled, however before insinuating that someone can only get a job cleaning the toilets in McDonald's, at least have the decency to do so in a sentence that makes sense. Otherwise you come across as a bit of a knob .... Son
