hi all

Found a lot o threads covering almost all gearboxes but havent find any detiled info about swap using that gearbox

Image

1.My concerns are what mounts to use on it , what crosmember , and would be much eaisier for me if someone got picture of modified gear selector arms.

2.Also i would like to modifiy pas pipes but just wondering are they ok for beeing tig welded, some time ago ive done RHD to LHD swap in e46 and had some trouble with them as rubber parts got plastic tubing inside...
Does e46 rack need some spacers? any photos anyone?

3.Did any one used e39 air con fan on his swap as i got one spare with new resistors.

4.ETK shows e28 m5 engine mounts with right and left option to pick form. which ones should i get?

i will be converting my 316i with M40 motor. Front and back suspension changed for 325i one.

thats what i manage to collect till now:

e36 steering rack with pipes got e46 one as well
e36 328 propshaft
e34 m50 520i sump ,dipstick ,oil pickup
e34 m50 throttle cable
e34 Universal steering joints x2 (got Corsa linkage so probably sell those)
e30 2.93 diff
clio servo (need spacer)
m52b28 (102682 miles) engine from 328i with wiring
e39 528i manual ECU + EWS + KEY + ring antenna
bmw e39 PAS pump
e39 alternator
e39 starter motor
e39 1997 528i zf gearbox
e36 328i gear selecting mechanism
e36 airbox + MAF sensor+ rubber pipes
e39 thermostat coupling
88c thermostat
e36 328i radiator with air con fan switch from compact
compleate exhaust ready to go in e30 with m52 motor

What model is that gearbox from? I have a 5-speed ZF 'box from a 328i but it a little different to that one and is ATF only, rather than MTF only as the sticker on yours advises.

I used a standard facelift E30 cross-member with E21 gearbox mounts. The holes in the cross-member for the gearbox mounts needed drilling out and there's a small tab on the cross-member that needs tapping flat or grinding off so that the mounts sit flush. Easy fit. I didn't modify the linkage at all, except to tap a small flat into the selector shaft to make sure it didn't foul the rubber prop guibo in 4th gear. Shifter doesn't quite fit centre in the hole but it's good enough and there are no selection issues. Photos in my build diary:

15 mm spacers required for e46 rack. Get these from DanThe or I used some 15 mm welding spacers from Ebay. These fit between the top of the rack and the upper mounts on the subframe. Can't speak for pipes as I bought these ready-made from DanThe.

Gearbox if from my first e39 528i 1997/sep . I would be glad if you would have photos of your gearbox, my concern is size, is it the same as rest of ZF boxes?? Gear selector from e36 fits spot on.

Im sure the gearbox is the same as the 328i
A quality synthetic ATF will be fine, no need to spend £££ on BMW oil
E36 linkages will fit fine

Using an M20 flywheel/clutch/starter is a better option than the E36/E39 junk BTW 8)

Hi

Guy stated clutch plate as brand new valeo, so if not will get money back. Can someone tell me how to properly fit that ive read about some washer plates , diffrent bolts , trimming oil sump.... Any detailed info will be great!

What engine mounts to use e28 m5 right or left ones?
What e21 gearbox mounts : round ones or squareish?
Any one done pas pipes themselfs? Must be few people that did.

Thanks for info

If flywheel has been skimmed (i.e. lightened), you shouldn't need to trim the sump. If it hasn't been lightened, you will need to trim the sump. When you offer it all up to the crank flange you'll see what's what.

You will need M20 single mass flywheel bolts, BMW part no. 11227805885 I believe. You'll need a flywheel bolt spreader plate (called a 'spacer', but actually performs role as a locking washer for the flywheel bolts), part no. 11221262827.

I've got some Q-drive E28 M5 engine mounts, both the cylindrical 'hockey puck' shape - although I want to swap these out for some poly ones (AKG or otherwise) in the near future. The AKG mounts are custom for M50/M52/S5x in E30 applications.

I used cylindrical gearbox mounts: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E12-E21-E ... 3a80de9b22

From helping Motorhole, If i recall it was a E21 release bearing to take up the slack on a M20 flywheel conversion.
I'm sure he'll confirm it tonight.
BMW and Opel, both RWD, both german, both good fun

Some people have had problems with m20 325i release bearing with the e36 slave, others havnt. E21 bearing is a bit longer, about 15mm IIRC so I used one of those. Havnt driven it yet though so can't comment! Also as I am using an aftermarket pedal box, my clutch master is a slightly different size from stock. Will hopefully bleed it next week and give it a crack.
