Right.... I get a fair bit of white smoke out of the exhaust (mainly on start up), the coolent looks really murky (possibly oily but its how I bought it and not had time to change it) but there is no mayo on the oil cap and oil on dipstick looks fine.
Im giving the car to a mechanic hopefully next week to do the cambelt and put a new head gasket on, is there anything else I should get him to do while hes got the engine apart?
Engine advice please

Check that the head isn't cracked or eroded anywhere - could be the cause of your white smoke/murky water - was on my car anyway. It's quite common on these cars unfortunately.
For peace of mind, it's probably worth getting the head pressure tested and skimmed before putting it back on - cost about Ԛ£100 i think.
In my case, it was clear that the head was damaged when i took it off, so it went in the skip and i replaced it. See photos below.

Back behind an M20, but now I can hear it better.

Why are you changing the head gasket when there's no real evidence it's failed.
Murky coolant could just be very old coolant. See PeteE30tourers photos to see what neglected coolant does.

had a 323i a few years back, used to smoke like hell on start up (white) - did the valve clearances - sorted it out!
