the service light and the inspection light go on an off as usual
trying to do the service reset does nothing
this only happened after i played with the engine harness (M30 powered) BUT even if i unplug the engine harness now it stays the same..... do i now have a effed service indicator board ???
iv checked all fuses :((
its a step or 2 away from upgrading to a Late E30 perfect full harness from my donor spares car.... my wiring is starting to have problems this being one of them

This sounds like defunct SI board/SI batteries to me.

Some batteries can be replaced, but the old one's may well have puked over the circuit board, rendering it scrap.

Try a spare instument cluster,if you have one,or can borrow/beg/steal one!

Yeah thanks :) I was kinda thinking it was going to be something like that
Just strange that it happened at the same time as other work I was doing on the car
I might try new batteries on the board an see what happens

I put some new batts in SI board ... That fixed the econo meter ,temp and tach but didn't change the service lights
I'm putting the whole new harness in the car now so hoping that fixes it

Harness isn't going to help, I'm afraid. The original problem was caused, not by your work on the car, but by the fact that you disconnected SI board batteries that were just clinging onto life, from their life support system in the form of the car's main battery while the work was done, and they promptly died.
Are you sure you're trying to reset the lights correctly?

Yeah but they stay on 24/7 if I'm not going to drive the car for more than a few days I need to disconnect the batt cos it goes flat. When I do connect it I get a start not big but bigger than what should be normal
The wiring is going in anyway to fix some other issues and if it doesn't fix the SI board ill get a new one from a very late E30 otherwise I will just pull the SI out completely ! Who really uses it I. This day an age???

SI board contains the electronics for ALL of the instrument cluster, except the speedo, not just the SI system, so not a good idea to remove it.
Never heard of this before - are you sure you've fitted the correct spec. batteries? Try disconnecting them again for a while.
