And a 3.5l M30 with box:

Since I'm a bit useless with a spanner I dropped it straight round my mates house, he's a member on here somewhere - dough.

Stage 1 will be complete when we hear her roar into life.
Stage 2 will be nitrous.
dough begins work

First job was to get the 318is engine out.

That's where it's at so far. Doug tells me the downpipes just landed and I ordered the exhaust manifolds and prop today so we're not far off hearing her fire updough wrote: i got the old out and new sat on the mounts bank holiday monday, as you can see its very, very tight! The engine is an M30 3.5, with around 220BHP as stock, good basis for turboing, as BMW used to race these turboed back in the day!
Had to ahem reshape the slam panel slightly to allow the motor to fit, its very tight and i was working alone, i will redress this at weekend when i refit the bonnet
here the rad is fitted, its a deep narrow rad (alpina derived), and is again a very tight fit!, had to remove the existing fan to get it in, and dress the seams back with a hammer, also the car had been towed by the front crossmember, so had to reshape it into line and dress the seams (sledge hammer job!) As you can see, i had to remove all the bumpre, spoiler and front panel to fit the rad, fan etc
tonight i decided to fit a fan in front of the rad for joel, to make some space and tidy the bay, its from a pajero, i extended the wires and made some mountings thus
rad
fan position
brackets, using captive fixings, 2mm plate steel
brackets bent and welded on
and fan in place, done this way so the fan can be rempoved without disturbing the rad if necessary and to save valuable space and weight!
refitted, belted and piped the powersteering pump. Needed to nick a pipe from my car, as the pipes on the 4cyl cars come out at odd angles that wont reach
Final fitted the rad, fan and wiring, horn relocated, but i may move it elsewhere as i dont like it obscuring the top of the rad where it needs the most cool air, 6 cyl e30s usually have twin horns under the wheelarches, so may move it there, but will move easily if there is a problem
And finally made ad fitted all the rad hoses, the elbow was supplied wit the car and has a tee piece that goes to the heater
refitted the bonnet, and it actually closes!
refitted the front panel, including a clearance hole for the new fan (will be invisible behind the bumper)
This side of the engine and bay are now complete, fuel and return pipes fitted, header tank brackets made, painted and fitted, heater hoses made and fitted, rad filled and part bled. Made a throttle cable adapter to use the stock cable, fitted the harness shielding at the bulkhead top, and reharnessed the wiring, which is now all in place, just needs tywrapping into place
red wires in the above pic are power and switch feed to the fan relay that i tucked out of sight behind the front panel, they will be harnessed into the main loom once routed and trimmed to length
throttle cable bracket
header tank
maf fitted and wiring covers all done
wiring routed, relays nowmounted in the car out of sight
so really waiting for exhaust parts now, will do a few fiddly bits in the week, spent all morning flipping the steering linkage to try and get the stock manifold to fit, which it almost does, bu i cant grind much more away, so going to fit the e34 ones that definately fit with good clearance!
