Right well turbo arrived this morning so thats just about all the mechanical bits i need got so now its onto Management and this is the area i have no clue about i seem to be able to find bits and bobs of info but its still all a bit confusing so firstly whats the one to use most seem to use Vems or megasquirt but what about stuff like greddy emanage or apexi that all the jap lads seem to use, are most e30`s on MS or vems because its the best or just documented.
Next would be which system and where to buy from i looked at MS and found there is quite a few different ones, how easy is it to install too it looks like you solder wires into the ecu which to be fair even though i have a spare ecu im not overly excited about doing then when it comes to mapping is it something most mapping places are going to be able to map or what .
Last how much am i looking to pay i have budgeted £500 but thats not strict .
thanks in advance for any help

Unless you are willing to do your own soldering 500pounds will not get you a fully working system with everything you need.

You will need

ECU
and
Wideband monitoring of some sorts

I reccomend the VEMS as I have mapped ALOT of them, turbo e30´s or not.
You are best to stay away from any sort of piggyback when using turbos on E30´s as the OEM system is not very capable of dealing with alot of fiddling around.

Here is some Motronic 1.3 >> VEMS wiring info I wrote a while back.

Where can i buy vems from , i know you did a group buy last year but from reading other posts etc you wont be doing another anytime soon.
the 500 quid was just a kind of guide it is flexible as i want the right system the car is going to be used for drag racing and i dont want it blowing to bits every meeting due to bad management but at the same time i dont want to spend over 1k on a Link etc system then have to start getting it mapped. Also with a Vems if i take it to a local mapping place are they going to know what it is and be able to map it as most the local lads tend to only really work with jap stuff

Where are you based?

A VEMS package is 720pounds now which includes

VEMS ECU
Wideband sensor, wiring and connector
Air temp sensor

If the car is running, then depending on what you need mapped, I´d supply you with a base map for your engine, then your local tuner must be able to put numbers into fuel table and ignition table cells so that it doesn´t blow up.

based in the Middlesbrough area , i am new to this side of things mechanical is no bother wires is another game altogether ,from looking at that link you posted it looks like wire wise some are cut into the original loom and some are new wires to things like 4 of the injectors etc .I will have to have a good look at this in the morning, Thanks for the replays that sounds a good option.

the only thing is my car is a tech 1 and only has two row`s of pins on the ecu so it looks like i will have to build one up

Sounds like you'll need to convert the loom to Motronic 1.3 spec;

So im not really keen on swapping all the loom over to 1.3 just to buy a pnp system if i can wire in a normal one for half the price ..If my understanding is correct This system would be fine and is cheap at the price (with 8` harness and postage it comes to about 400 quid) just would like a second oppinion before i click to buy or if i should go megasquirt 3 ? (the car is just a toy its going to be used for drag racing so dont need toys like antilag just flat shift would be nice)

Give phill at extra efi a go if you are based in the UK and after a ms, he built mine a good chap. If you were to go the ms3 side I'd say its well worth going for the ms3x card gives you options for sequential fuel and coil on plug, all the extras ya could want without modding the ecu any more. My m20b25 is na but sequential fuel, coil near plug off a gm ls2 engine with a home made cam sensor, am using the e30 clocks to feed a speed signal to ecu so can display speed and the current gear your driving in and also log that info, also basic launch control and exhaust gas temp logging also through the ms3 also a electric fan driven from it and prob a few other bits also. Iv not used ms2 before but I'm sure it would be up to the job if that's the rout you were after without all the goodies, just don't expect the car to be perfect out the box if your tuning your self you will need to be patient, iv daily driven mine for about a year now with ms and its not let me down yet. And still making tweaks now and then.

No matter which system you choose you would still need to swap to the 1.3 loom, as you need the 60-2 wheel and VR sensor(crankshaft position sensor).

That doesn´t mean you need the whole loom, the crank sensor wiring, 60-2 wheel and VR sensor + bracket can all be installed totally seperately.

As long as you get shielded wire and a 3pin junior timer connector you can plug the vr sensor right in. Remember to ground the shield on one side so that you keep it clear of noise. The cost would be less then 25-30 if you find a used sensor and bracket.

Technically you should be able to use the old system if your ecu of choise is adaptable enough, i.e
it can run a 113+2 or whatever the old system is.

If you haven´t done wiring in the past and aren´t able to find time to understand proper grounding then keep away from your own wiring, I´ve seen it to many times that people just put grounds every which way and end up with a car that hardly runs
With great challenges comes great engineering.

Whoever is going to do your mapping, get them to choose an ECU they want to work with. That perhaps will be cheaper and easier in the long run.
