I've had my Touring off the road with SORN for last year. It's not rust trap or anything.
I want to take it to garage 40 miles away for MOT and some improvements but it'll be in garage for a while. Anybody know if I can get cheap insurance for this short trip and while it's in garage.
I don't want a whole years driving insurance cos it won't be back on the road - I just had basic 'storage' insurance while it was off the road.
Any ideas on a flexible company that might help me out, I don't want to dodge the law.

id go with what chips saying, trailer it over. you dont need insurance for it being in the garage. if anything happens to your car when its in the garages posession then its their problem and they have insurance for such things

you can legally drive a vehicle that is on SORN to a MOT station PROVIDED it is booked in for the MOT.
On the insurance side of things, most policies will exclude you if the vehicle does not have MOT or any rent in the screen, but perhaps an exception is made in this scenario, otherwise you are left with the hassles of trailering it there & back.
try dayinsure as suggested, if not, if the E30 is a second car, you could add it to your existing motor policy for your daily driver as a temporary vehicle for as long as you like.

your SUPPOSED to take it to the nearest MOT testing station.
If you get pulled, and you say your taking it for an MOT test 40 miles away the police will laugh at you then your BUSTED.
my normal insurance company let me insure a car for one day on another policy. only cost me 5.95 and thats the minimum charge.

not looked the particular section of the Road traffc Act that covers this, but the car is going both for the MOT and to have the remedial work done, I don't think it is unreasonable that the car is driven 40 miles if a particular specialist is needed for the vehicle.
What's the risk of being pulled? Does the car look like a turd?

are you sure about the sorn ? i was told after rebuilding my last car that i couldnt take it on the road as it had no tax or insurance to get it 1 mile to the mot station. i wasnt allowed to tow it either, none of the wheels are allowed to be in contact with the road, which meant i had to trailer it around :?i dont think youll get insurance without having an mot and you cant drive on the road without insurance, catch 22 , is the risk of getting pulled worth it? you could end up banned ,all it takes is some muppet bumping into you and youd be done for no insurance, mot or tax

Beemerlad, if the car needs work before the MOT, then the DVLA can argue that it's not road worthy so you shouldn't be driving it on a Public road, so short of the trailer idea, he's buggered i think

If it needs mot work then just drive it there. Also if it needs general work, and it has no tax, usualy pretending its on its way to mot will work, and the garage seem to cover you on it if asked. (im not saying this!). The garage will turn a blind one, or mine does! Same thing with sorn, just drive it there. (cough). Although if you are caught its a 2 grand fine and potental imrpisoment (so it says on the net). So maybe a trailer is best, whats the laws on towing?

It says on the back of every FAIL certificate, that you can take your car TO AND FROM a pre-booked MOT test, AND TO AND FROM a place which is to cary out repair (also pre-booked) WITHOUT TAX OR MOT
And you DO need insurance to drive the car.
Towing... YOU CANT TOW A CAR THAT DOESNT HAVE TAX.

I deliver cars for a living as long as it is booked in for a MOT we drive cars on our trade plates and insurance. Or we truck it if a non-runner.
If you want us to move it, trade plates, Ԛ£40 plus fuel. trucking Ԛ£60 including fuel. Plus the dreaded VAT
This is a discounted rate for Zoners
Were in and out of Bristol MERC & BMW most days

All of the above, my thoughts exactly.
The car isn't a rust bucket, it's it v.good condition. Regardless how honest I like to think I am
any policeman worth his salt is probably going to think twice about letting me carry on if I've got 40 miles to go with no MOT or TAX.
I think I'll have to take it to nearest (cheapest) MOT, get the tick in the box
and then insure it for a drive to the workshop. When I get an MOT, I'll probably have to tax it as well even though I only want it on the road for a day before it goes to the workshop for some long term work
They've got these clever tax disc cameras now as well!!
Anybody wanna trailer my Touring from Exeter to Plymouth for a fair price?

Just saw your post - you in Exeter? Got a number for your company? Car's in Exeter and want to get it to Plymouth, not immediately, but in the next month or so?

Have you thought about using an A-Frame. Once a car has an A-Frame connected to it it is technically classed as a trailer. Only requirement is that the tyres have decent tread. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. This is how I transport my track car at the moment - no tax, insurance or MOT on the track car. hth.

i was told all 4 wheels had to be off the road, doesnt an a frame just lift the front. if the rear wheels are on the road then the car is still technically on the road

Whats the deal with if you were to buy a car and drive it home 200 miles with no tax, MOT or insurance?

You are talking about a tow dolly which lifts the front wheels.
An A-Frame connects to the front wishbones and all four wheels stay on the road.
The point I was making is that if an A-Frame is connected to the car then the car cannot be driven by anybody - it can only be towed the same as you tow a trailer or a caravan (and you don't have to tax,MOT or insure a trailer or a caravan).

Taylor, a car is a mechanically propelled vehicle though so requires TAX & MOT but a caravan/trailer does not obviously.

Never a good idea to drive without insurance even though it's a rip off and not related to the actual risk of your own driving - why should I be penalised for other bad drivers of my age
Nevermind someone giving you a shunt but if you're driving without insurance and you knock someone over that could easily change your lifestyle

What you do is get your mate who took you there to follow you back pretty close, just incase out of the blue an old bill pulls out of a junction and puts your numberplate through "the check"E30BeemerLad wrote:I think I would spend 200 miles looking in my rear view mirrorDemlotcrew wrote:Whats the deal with if you were to buy a car and drive it home 200 miles with no tax, MOT or insurance?
