A hammer and chissel/screwdriver gets them captive nuts out :) Had to do it earlier to get the carpet out.

Looks like I need that heater gasket anyway

The heater matrix looks pretty good, I'll take a pic of it and upload it. I can understand NOW is the right time to change it though, like wise with the heater gasket, neither are easily accesible with the interior in place.

Is there anything for the heater controls that fails regularly that could be easily replaced now?

May as well do the heater resistor if they are cheap enough. Don't think there's anything else to bother with really.

Thats the one I must be thinking of. If it goes you lose 1-3 fan speed or something? Mine has been fine but if it's inexpensive enough I see no reason not to do it now. The list keeps on growing!

Thats it, it's not that hard to replace when the dash is in. Just have to remove the glovebox trim.

Here's the wiki I wrote - http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/inde ... nly_on_Max

Would you have a part no or is it something you get from a motor factors? I can't see a mention of it in the wiki.

There's absolutely no point whatsoever in replacing a good heater resistor - it's not a 'wearing' part! Just make sure that the heater fan is lubricated properly, and it'll never fail.

Because partly seized motors cook them, and make the thermal cut out operate.

when i pulled my heater resistor out (idea was to check it as was overhauling the heater motor) and found the circuits inside to be very corroded so replaced anyhow.
