The head gasket is gone, or the head has cracked, or even worse the bottom end has gone on the e21, I will assess the damage tonight when I get the car home. However, by the sound of it I need a new lump. Due to lack of funds a 323 is not going to happen so I would need an m10, either 1.8 or 2 litre. What sort of prices do these fetch usually, Iv never had experience with 4 cylinders til buying the E21. I understand e30 ones are the same

The injected M10 is a much better engine than the carb dog. Obviously it will fit but there will be wiring involved, a home to be found for the ecu, an electric pump, a fuel return line and more to consider. A 518 engine IIRC correctly , may have a different sump to an E21 and possibly a different oil pump. If you go injected, the costs will soon mount up and the insurance penalty (if any) will need to be checked before doing anything.
Using your carb intake on an injection engine is not an option as injected head intake ports are much bigger and the manifold will not seal . You would also need to fit an electric pump as there is no provision for the mechanical one. Earlier 2.0 engines are not suitable either as the distributor cam gear is reversed. Before an E21 expert chimes in and says you can do this and use that, yes you could build and fit a 150 bhp 2.0 BUT if you had five bags, you would not be foooking around with sorry scrap like this
I converted one twenty years ago, a minty henna red A plate. The victim owned a Chinese restaurant in Acton . He is still there, the E21 has long gone
hateful foooking turds !

Advice muchly appreciated as always pete thank you. Im just going to get a carbed E21/30 1.8 m10 and put it in. I cant afford to do 323 or M20 so il just leave it stock. I can put it on GSXR1100 carbs for 120 poiunds so that will whack it to 115ish bhp and thats plenty. Only been driving 2 months now and its scary enough at times.

DO NOT fit the stupid bike carbs ! Without PROFESSIONAL jetting and setting up (= lotz of till) it will at best run like a pig and at worst you will need another engine

I would rather spend my time getting an injection M10 going than fcking about with carbs!
The E28 518i sump is the same as an E21, so you just need to swap the engine mount arms over to get it in the bay, the loom will be different but they are so basic it wouldnt be much work to get it going.
Check out the E21 forum as there are plenty that have upgraded to injection engines.
Without doubt its the only M10 worth putting back into the car

Il consider it, I just want something very simple and quick to do. And i dont like the E21 forum, its fucking dead so iv not spent much time on it.
I just wanna have it running so i can get to work then once the E30 is finished il stick an m20 in the 21

I'd agree to a point, but then disagree. A fuel injection M10 makes about 105hp. Mine with a Weber DGV which cost around £500 to install makes 101hp, and tbh, it's not even jetted that well. When you look at it like that, injection is better. However, with some twin 40's and a combination of different M10 bits, you can make a lot more power with carbs than you ever will the standard injection system. But the only reason you'd do that is because of a cc limit, otherwise you'd just got M20.DanThe wrote:I would rather spend my time getting an injection M10 going than ********* about with carbs!

2 litres will be expensive because their sought after, and the injection ones will be added grief to install in your car, so you're right going for a carbed one from an E21/30.

Sorry to hear its knackered Euan hope you get it going again soon.
If you want it back on the road quick just find another matching donk and whack it in - conversions are all well and good but to do them right and get it running properly will be a load of fookin aggro.
Better just get something which is literally swappable where all the pipes and wiring will connect straight up - you can always look at swapping to a bigger/better/injected setup later when you're better prepped for it.
Good luck

Pretty retarded looking at it solely from a power perspective. Things like drivability, power delivery, fuel economy and reliability all rank far higher on a road car.capnmchl wrote:I'd agree to a point, but then disagree. A fuel injection M10 makes about 105hp. Well yeah. No one who's going to mod an engine that far is interested in fuel economy tbh. The power delivery from carbs is much better than that of fuel injection, driveability is moot, and carbs are a lot more reliable than fuel injection.ross_jsy wrote:Pretty retarded looking at it solely from a power perspective. Well having inspected it looks like a bolt that was holding the air filter on has disappeared down my shitty fucked carb and probably jammed/bent a valve and whacked up and snapped a rocker arm. Will find out properly later.
I knew I hadnt blown it up, I dont drive it that hard and i respect the car. Im hoping it will be a case of putting a few new minor parts in, ravs weber and then turning the key so i can do the welding for the MOT.
Yet again, the worst bit about a classic BMW is the fucking tool behind the wheel/or friend not tightening a bolt properly

Carbs can be very reliable if set up properly, and a total PITA if they aren't.
Early fuel injection systems such as the Lucas PI type fitted to Triumphs, etc., were notoriously flaky as well, despite originally having been developed for military applications!

Rear drum brakes have certain advantages to rear discs. Contact breaker points are a no no though.pacerpete wrote:capnmchl wrote:

The shitty 'electric carbs' that came on these engines is a pita, but change it for a decent after market one, and it's instantly better. Instant throttle response, and they don't rely on metres of wiring and a dozen electrical sensors to keep running right.

Problem here is that it IS going to snowball!
What you can lose sight of is that you could naff about putting another engine in and forget about the weldathon that is looming on all e21's now!
Personally? I'd be cutting my losses now.
